Europe was created by history. America was created by philosophy.
If my critics saw me walking over the Thames they would say it was because I couldn't swim.
Being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren't.

Re: Margaret Thatcher dead

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/poli...ers-death.html
Ken Livingstone, Labour’s former London Mayor who clashed with Lady Thatcher during his time running the Greater London Council in the 1980s, said her personal “courage and drive” made her “the most admirable prime minister of modern times”.

“She didn’t worry about focus groups, she didn’t read the newspapers,” he said.

“There was real courage.”

However, Mr Livingstone said it had been “a tragedy for Britain” that her policies had been so badly flawed.

“The trouble is almost everything that’s wrong with Britain today is her legacy. It was her who took the decision to deregulate the banks. She decided to allow our manufacturing to wither, she decided to stop building council homes. She created the benefits crisis,” he claimed.

“The Britain she inherited was at broadly full employment. She decided when she wrote off our manufacturing industry that she could live with two or three million unemployed.

“Every real problem we face today is the legacy of the fact she was fundamentally wrong.”

Re: Margaret Thatcher dead

Before Thatcher, there was a major strike pretty much every day. I once read the story of a plant engineer who put a new roll of toilet paper in the stall at work, and was terrified that if he was found out, his whole company would be shut down by picket lines. He had taken someone else's job, you see. And if the janitors went on strike as a result, every other union would strike in sympathy.

A BBC story on Thatcher and the Unions from 2004.

RIP.

Elvis Costello and Morrissey are not saddened by this news.

Tramp the Dirt Down - Elvis Costello

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/m0oEILm5vWY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I saw a newspaper picture from the political campaign
A woman was kissing a child, who was obviously in pain
She spills with compassion, as that young child's
Face in her hands she grips
Can you imagine all that greed and avarice
Coming down on that child's lips

Well I hope I don't die too soon
I pray the lord my soul to save
Oh I'll be a good boy, I'm trying so hard to behave
Because there's one thing I know, I'd like to live
Long enough to savor
That's when they finally put you in the ground
I'll stand on your grave and tramp the dirt down

When England was the whore of the world
Margaret was her madam
And the future looked as bright and as clear as
The black tarmacadam
Well I hope that she sleeps well at night, isn't
Haunted by every tiny detail
'Cos when she held that lovely face in her hands
All she thought of was betrayal

And now the cynical ones say that it all ends the same in the long run
Try telling that to the desperate father who just squeezed the life from his only son
And how it's only voices in your head and dreams you never dreamt
Try telling him the subtle difference between justice and contempt
Try telling me she isn't angry with this pitiful discontent
When they flaunt it in your face as you line up for punishment
And then expect you to say thank you straighten up, look proud and pleased
Because you've only got the symptoms, you haven't got the whole disease
Just like a schoolboy, whose head's like a tin-can
Filled up with dreams then poured down the drain
Try telling that to the boys on both sides, being blown to bits or beaten and maimed
Who takes all the glory and none of the shame

Well I hope you live long now, I pray the lord your soul to keep
I think I'll be going before we fold our arms and start to weep
I never thought for a moment that human life could be so cheap
'Cos when they finally put you in the ground
They'll stand there laughing and tramp the dirt down

Morrissey - Margaret On The Guillotine

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/hsq3H_6XuFA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Songwriters: MORRISSEY

The kind people
Have a wonderful dream
Margaret on the guillotine
Cause people like you
Make me feel so tired
When will you die ?
When will you die ?
When will you die ?
When will you die ?
When will you die ?

And people like you
Make me feel so old inside
Please die

And kind people
Do not shelter this dream
Make it real
Make the dream real
Make the dream real
Make it real
Make the dream real
Make it real

Re: Margaret Thatcher dead

Will They Apologize to Margaret Thatcher?

Claire Berlinski, Ed. · November 19, 2010 at 7:22am

As Peter Osborne correctly points out in the Daily Telegraph, Margaret Thatcher knew the single currency would devastate Europe.

Today, Margaret Thatcher’s autobiography, first published in 1993, reads like a prophecy. It shows how deeply and with what extraordinary wisdom she had examined Delors’ proposals for the single currency. Her overriding objection was not ill-considered or xenophobic, as subsequent critics have repeatedly claimed.

They were economic. Right back in 1990, Mrs Thatcher foresaw with painful clarity the devastation it was bound to cause. Her autobiography records how she warned John Major, her euro-friendly chancellor of the exchequer, that the single currency could not accommodate both industrial powerhouses such as Germany and smaller countries such as Greece. Germany, forecast Thatcher, would be phobic about inflation, while the euro would prove fatal to the poorer countries because it would “devastate their inefficient economies”.

It is as if, all those years ago, the British prime minister possessed a crystal ball that enabled her to foresee the catastrophic events of the past year or so in Ireland, Greece and Portugal. Indeed, it is one of the tragedies of European history that the world chose not to believe her. President Mitterrand of France and Chancellor Kohl of Germany dismissed her words of caution. And when Mrs Thatcher was driven from office in 1990, a crucial voice was lost, and a new consensus started to form in Britain in favour of the euro.

Osborne, apparently, has been trying to call the politicians who stood against her policies and for the single currency. "I wanted to ask them for an apology. Not one of them came back."

Why am I not surprised?

Baroness Thatcher has often been accused by her politically motivated enemies of callousness. But backers of the European project are today happy to countenance unlimited human suffering in their mission to enforce economic and monetary union. Mrs Thatcher knew this would be the result of their deranged plan, which is why she fought to stop it. Her last battle as prime minister could not have been fought in a greater or more compassionate cause.

Indeed. I suppose it is asking too much of human nature that the men who betrayed her admit now that they were wrong and she was right--no less that they stand up in public and apologize to her.

Everyone apart from them, however, now sees clearly who was on the right side of history

Because that's an extremely douchey thing to do? "Hey dude, you're a fucking moron, want to apologize for being a fucking moron? Give me a call, you fucking moron."

Re: Margaret Thatcher dead

Thatcher/Reagan/John Paul II certainly were a formidable force against the Soviet Union and Thatcher was the backbone of the group.

Some people may not agree with what she did domestically for the UK, but her tenure is probably what kept the UK from becoming Spain or Portugal or Greece even sooner than they did.

She was a strong woman who broke the backs of UK labor unions. Even at the height of the union movement in the United States, we didn't come close to Britain in the 70's in terms of how dependent they were on government programs. She got some things right, and other things wrong, just like any other politician. However, for better or worse, she set the course of British society that they're still on today, just as Reagan did for America.

Re: Margaret Thatcher dead

Thatcher governed the UK with a completely transparent contempt for a sizable percentage of its citizens. Her government viewed the working class as animals to be herded and controlled, not as human beings to whom dignity was a birthright.

Perhaps she didn't adopt the American model and was just too transparent about it.

Seeing how Unions are breaking California I'm all for being a Hard Ass when it comes to dealing with them.

As mentioned earlier, she got some things right(Breaking the Unions). But like any other Politician she also got some things wrong.
