Pope Benedict XVI to resign February 28th

http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/11/world/...l?c=homepage-t

Rome (CNN) - Pope Benedict XVI will resign on February 28, his spokesman Father Federico Lombardi told CNN Monday.

The 85-year-old pope is resigning "because of advanced age," Benedict told the cardinals of the Catholic Church on Monday.

"Strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me," the pope told the cardinals, according to the Vatican.

The last pope to resign was Gregory XII in 1415. He did so to end a civil war within the church in which more than one man claimed to be pope.

Benedict, the 265th pope, is the sixth German to serve as pope and the first since the 11th century. He became pope in 2005.

He has led church after the third-longest papacy in church history and during a time in which the church is declining in his native Europe but expanding in Africa and Latin America.

Benedict's time as pope has been marked with a series of scandals and controversies, including hundreds of new allegations of sexual abuse by priests.

Hmm....advanced age, eh? Seems reasonable.

Re: Pope Benedict XVI to resign February 28th

I saw this tweet this morning in regards to his resignation that I found funny: "Jesus never quit. Why did you?"

I'm curious to see who will be his successor as the person has a tough task ahead...

This is crazy, wow.

Not that I believe in this sort of thing, but back when he was first voted in I remember it being discussed about predictions and prophesies foretelling that this pope would be a very short term reign after a death or resignation and that after him there would only be one more pope elected in history.

Am I crazy, or do any of you guys remember this as well?

I commend him for his decision.

Too bad his predecessor didn't do the same.

Maybe they elect somebody a bit younger this time.

My theory: He's fallen in love and wants to get married.

I don't know what to think of this. The pope is expected to die in office, like a king. Benedict is very conservative, and has spent his term trying to put things back to the way they used to be. Then, for his last act, he intends to do something unprecedented.

Let's hope his successor believes that the church needs a good cleaning, instead of continuing to close ranks to protect the bad members.

Re: Pope Benedict XVI to resign February 28th

His 89-year-old brother, Georg Ratzinger, said doctors had recently advised the pope not to take any more trans-Atlantic trips.

Given the global ministry of the modern papacy, as precedented by John Paul II aka The Pilgrim Pope, I imagine his declining health and inability to travel are his reasons for resignation.

Pope's official statement:

"Having seen the blessed fleshy orbs of Katy Perry on the Grammys, I realized that a life spent in celibacy is not the way to go. I am resigning the papacy, and will move to Cali, to pursue a career as an independent film producer."

Speaking as someone who has no idea what the Pope's job is: What does the successor have to "do" that won't be an easy task?

Lots of waving. Standing on balconies waving can be tiresome. And contemplating his next non-decision on pedophile priests.

I'm taking bets that the new Pope will come from the College of Cardinals - maybe even Africa.

When (if) you get 85, I bet you'll think differently.

I'm not Catholic, and I do enjoy good Catholic/pedophile jokes, but right now the Catholic church is probably the safest place for young boys. They have gone so far in the other direction of investigating, getting rid of guys who just have rumors against them, etc. (as they should). But for me, because of their history, I will continue to enjoy the jokes. They've been Paterno'd for the rest of time.

Having said that, I remember when he was elected (and also can't believe it was 10 years) and the talk was that he was just really seen as an holding spot for someone because of how old he is. Maybe we'll see our first American Pope.

Penn State is the safest place. The church is still chock full of frustrated, celibate men.

Yeah, can't have been 10 years. Wow. I didn't think he'd live that long.
