Remember that time when that one politician ...

Not so fast ...

In the largest false memory study to date, 5,269 participants were asked about their memories for three true and one of five fabricated political events. Each fabricated event was accompanied by a photographic image purportedly depicting that event. Approximately half the participants falsely remembered that the false event happened, with 27% remembering that they saw the events happen on the news. Political orientation appeared to influence the formation of false memories, with conservatives more likely to falsely remember seeing Barack Obama shaking hands with the president of Iran, and liberals more likely to remember George W. Bush vacationing with a baseball celebrity during the Hurricane Katrina disaster. A follow-up study supported the explanation that events are more easily implanted in memory when they are congruent with a person's preexisting attitudes and evaluations, in part because attitude-congruent false events promote feelings of recognition and familiarity, which in turn interfere with source attributions.

Well, given the integrity of the news media, those COULD have happened on the news even if they didn't REALLY happen. I wouldn't even bat an eye at an allegation they DID happen on TV.

(Remember things like NBC putting a bomb in gas tank to show gas tanks are dangerous in a collision?
They really are when there is a bomb wired to go off on impact.)

Every time we remember an event in our past we are actually remembering our last memory of said event. Really interesting stuff.

Hmmm. It's almost like cheap, easy access to unintellectual and partisan-oriented, corporate-fed news is causing problems. Who would have guessed?

This is just another example of problems caused by news being fed through the boob tube. News told with blowhard, one-sided confidence.

There should just be one news feed that only tells the truth. They can call it "Truth".

Great post. It was even better when a conservative poster shared it five years ago, when we won in Iraq before Obama took over.

There is no truth.

Until people understand this, pretend confidence and pretend assurance will continue to ruin everything.

I thought endlessly repeating the same drivel was what politics was all about.

Interesting. Some of the edited images are plausable to the casual observer, such as Lieberman voting to impeach bubba, while others are Iranian level photoshops, like Bush in a truck with, well, who is that guy anyhow?

Akira Kurosawa did it in a more entertaining fashion with Rashomon.

Man just wants to forget the bad stuff, and believe in the made-up good stuff. It's easier that way.

There used to be two newspapers, one called The Truth, and one called The News. People said that there was no news in The Truth and no truth in The News.

If they combine them we can have nothing in everything. I think they call that infotainment.

Re: Remember that time when that one politician ...

Back in the 1970s I read about a study where people were asked what they were doing when they learned that President Kennedy was shot. We all believe that's a critical event in people's lives that was indelibly burnt into everybody's memories. (By comparison, you remember exactly what were you doing when you learned that terrorists had flown a plane into the World Trade Center.) The researchers went back to the same people a decade later, and asked the same questions, and discovered that even that memory had changed.

I wish I could find a reference to that study on the internet. Maybe I don't remember it correctly.

Everything is so sensationalized.

Example - 5 Hour Energy leads to 13 deaths

Result - Some Dumb Fuck Politicians in Chicago now want to make it illegal....

Remember that time when former Arkansas governor Jimmy Carter nearly choked to death on a pretzel while watching his closeted gay son's ballet recital?
