Unhappy Americans petition to secede from US following election

More than 100,000 Americans have petitioned the White House to allow their states to secede from the US, after President Barack Obama's re-election.

The appeals were filed on the White House's We the People website.

Most of the 20 states with petitions voted for Republican Mitt Romney.

The US constitution contains no clause allowing states to leave the union. By Monday night the White House had not responded.

In total, more than 20 petitions have been filed. One for Texas has reached the 25,000-signature threshold at which the White House promises a response.

I believe the phrase is "sour grapes".

Why can't republicans just riot and occupy like Democrats?

I'll bet if we had a vote on this, more liberals than conservatives would vote in support of this. Which raises the question - why aren't we doing it?

Likely many of the same people who were shouting "America - love it or leave it!" during 8 years of Bush. And they didn't mean via secession.

Liberals wouldn't vote for this....how could they save us from ourselves and feel good about doing it?

Looking at the map of the Reds I'm not sure there is any state that I would care about leaving. Maybe I'd hate to give up Georgia, obviously we'd have to buy oil from Texas but it's not like the other red states have much use for that oil so we'd get it at a good price. Other than that we're really losing nothing.

These people do realize, of course, that they will have to surrender all military equipment, active duty personnel and armaments (including any nukes) stored in their new "country". They'll be responsible for their own border protection, making their own trade agreements, developing their own laws, and paying taxes, because their happy, smiling state government will now be a de facto evil smelly federal government. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

Plus, there will have to be a period where anyone who doesn't want to be a citizen of Reagansvania (i.e. smart people) will have to relocate at the state's expense. Of course, overpopulation will be an issue because of all the Real Americans© who need to abandon the United Socialist States of America.

I'm sort of curious how this would work out. Texas is the one state that makes the most noise about secession. What would The Republic of Texas' Constitution look like? What would their relation with Mexico be like? How would their economy work? Would they have a military, and how would it work?

What happens if we get a Republican president in 2016? Will they want to be part of the USA again?

The more I think about this idea the more I like it. And we should build a big-ass fence to separate us from them, too. Cuz they'll be the wetbacks now.

I'm guessing it's about 6 people from Alabama who want to secede and about 99,994 people from other states who want Alabama to secede.

Re: Unhappy Americans petition to secede from US following election

I was thinking about signing one of those secession petitions, but this gart is a poophead petition looks to be more important. Or maybe the petition to get Hannah Montanna come to Idaho Falls.

Too many choices!

I have to call bullshit on the 100,000 number as well. There were less than a thousand on the one I signed.

God, Romney lost but there will be a better candidate for the GOP in 2016 I still believe he was a throwaway like McCain. Get over it.

I think that this would be awesome. Let them have their own state. It would end up looking like New York in Escape from New York for sure. No taxes, everyone has guns, what could go wrong?

I would miss North Carolina but that's about it. We'd still get to keep Las Vegas, NYC, LA, Seattle, Chicago, Boston, Miami.. in other words everything would stay exactly the same.
