I think pretty much everyone is "reasonably" anti-abortion. I certainly am.

I believe that the majority of women who vote are against abortion, at least abortion with no limits. Therefore, no abortions after brain birth but with the normal exceptions would be a winning electoral issue. I agree though that it would have to be coupled with prevention education and birth control access.

What? Logic? That would be the logical thing to do. Obviously the most effective way of preventing abortions.

Instead, they're for abstinence education and no free birth control. Some are against birth control altogether.

I think the basic feeling behind it is that birth control encourages women to be sluts and they don't want them to be able to do that without consequences.

One of those contradictory views social conservatives tend to have.

I think it's simpler than that: Republicans too often default to treating women as brainless automatons who need the protection of powerful men, which of course, they are not, and do not.

The problem is that the studies about when brain birth occurs vary greatly.

Re: The 2016 Presidential Election thread

Thats why setting a ban after some arbitrary moment of gestation would be stupid even though I personally would rather not see women getting abortions after the 1st trimester. But thats just me and it's none of my business.

Which is exactly the problem. You may not like the idea of having it after the first trimester but you nor I are the ones that are carrying it around for 9 months. Any fight against abortion is a losing battle based off of that simple fact.

It's an issue that always comes up at election time and Supreme Court Justice time but it's really a non issue at any other time for the vast majority of the country.

Definitions vary greatly but if you define it as the time when brain waves begin to resemble what they will be for the rest of one's life (which I think is reasonable), that time is fairly well settled at 24 weeks at the earliest. That's my standard. Abortions should not be performed after the 24th week (unless the life of the mother is in danger or there would be very serious health issues for her), the earliest time, to be on the safe side.

It seems a few might push that back a couple more weeks to 22. I can accept 22 to be on the super-safe side.

If Obama has a daughter, it's not you nor I who has to care for it in the first 18 years of it's life either. But if Michelle wants to kill the baby 2 weeks after birth (while it is still unable to survive on its own) because it will be a burden, I assume we should step in and defend the child?

I wish I knew that Michelle Obama was running around slaughtering newborn babies a week ago! Notice how this comes out AFTER the election.

You are aware that people practiced infanticide all throughout history (and still do)... right?

I don't think anyone is actually for abortion but should it be needed I think people should have the option. Women just don't have abortion just cause.

Some scientists push it back a lot farther than that.

"Some" scientists deny man's effect on climate change too.

Check the record concerning past medical studies. Many are wrong - some a 100% wrong. Hepatitis B readily comes to mind.

Yes, many medical studies are wrong. That is why there are built in checks to determine what is truth. New evidence gives us new explanations. Eventually we hit upon a truth that is beyond reasonable doubt among scientists who are experts in the field. To claim that a consensus is wrong based upon the notion that a past individual study was wrong just shows an overwhelming ignorance as to what science is and how it operates.

No, they may have a different definition such as "any brainwaves at all." But they do not push back the brainwaves I have described. As I said, even 22 weeks is really pushing it.

Re: The 2016 Presidential Election thread

How does EVERY thread in Politics end up talking about abortion, homosexuality, or climate change?

I don't why.

I vote for a respite on a discussion of those issues.

Let's talk about politics. Although that's not as "exciting" to some of our members as a discusion of those issues you mention.
