That's the way I feel about this whole forum. Things used to be a lot more fun when "The One And Only..." threads didn't run 100+ pages.

Tai Chan indicted in Santa Fe deputy's killing at Las Cruces hotel

LAS CRUCES >> The former Santa Fe County sheriff's deputy accused of fatally shooting a colleague last month in a Las Cruces hotel has been indicted.

Thursday, a Doņa Ana County grand jury levied a first-degree murder charge against Tai R. Chan, 27, of Santa Fe.

Authorities allege that early on Oct. 28, a drunken Chan fired several shots at 29-year-old Jeremy Martin, a fellow deputy who was fleeing their shared, seventh-floor room at Hotel Encanto, according to court filings. Police found Martin bleeding on the floor near a hotel lobby elevator. He died shortly thereafter at a Las Cruces hospital.

Police found Chan on the seventh-floor landing to the hotel's roof. An officer reported that Chan smelled of alcohol and slurred his words, according to court filings. Chan allegedly said, "I shot the guy," referring to Martin.

Chan and Martin had stopped in Las Cruces, on their way back to Santa Fe, after transporting a prisoner to Safford, Arizona. The two had been drinking and arguing Monday night, a friend of Chan's told police.

"The sergeant will remain suspended without pay pending an internal investigation."

Wow, that is unusual.

Sgt. Shawn Glans. Glans is also the bulbous end of the penis. Seems fitting.

update on that story above: officer resigned & arrested for official misconduct & harassment, a misdemeanor and a violation. Not sure why there isn't a battery charge of some sort, quite certain if you slapped a cop on the back of the head, you'd get assault on a police officer.

If cops can find a car with a large amount of cash and seize that simply because that cash could be used to buy drugs, is there anything technically stopping cops from seizing a small amount of cash, that could also be used to buy drugs.

Maybe people will care more about asset seizure if the cops start going after people with $20 or less in their wallets.

Our local DA is pushing for this in Orange County NY.

I don't like it one bit and can see abuse written all over it.

Here is how it works if I remember correctly: They seize your asset (car) if you are accused of committing a crime.

They can only keep that asset if you are found guilty, but this is a HUGE bargaining chip that the DA holds over your head! He says plead guilty to this lesser charge, pay this amount,, or we hold your car until the trial is over and try to go after a conviction, and we will take our sweet time doing it - enjoy walking buddy.

I hope this gets challenged in the supreme court. The heart of the law makes sense.. you get to hit the drug dealers hard, who don't care about jail time and have no $$ to pay fines.

But this reeks of justice gone wrong - seize assets, and pay to get them back by pleading guilty to a lesser charge.

No idea what led up to that or if he was right in that they were just harassing him for no reason, but it appears they were pretty patient with him even though he was resisting (perhaps knowing they were on camera?). I don't see any brutality there.

I too am curious where the brutality is. He does seem to be resisting though.

From what I see on the video there I don't think so. A couple of things about it though the camera man was an ass, he definitely was getting too close potentially in the way around the 4:10 mark. I'm surprised at least one of the 6 (at final count I think it was) officers didn't address him sooner than they did. As the SGT said it's fine to record, just do it over there/away from the immediate area. Everyone is just hoping for their 15min of youtube fame

These guys are just won't stop antagonizing this guy. Yes he was wrong for littering, but they just won't drop it and clearly want the cop to act up and will not stop until he does something. I could not get through the whole thing.. they say the same things to each other over and over and over

Re: The "Cops Behaving Badly" Thread

Accusations by 13 different women, and still drawing suspension with pay? Is there a number that crosses a line where the chief might say "ya know, I think there's probably something going on here that warrants suspension without pay".
