May 21, 2011 - down the hatch, Planet Earth!

My first P&WE thread so bear with me, mods, if this is inappropriate. Mark your calendars, Otters and friends, because I am. And here is why. The definitive proof! Wecanknow.com has a billboard up along my commute which prompted this initial search and uncovering of this meme.

If they are wrong, as they always have been in my memory, can May 22 be Skeptics Day? I think we require a holiday as well.

Before Obamacare kicks in fully, so probably a good thing.

Well, you have to remember that Jesus wasn't around to read Revelation, otherwise He would have figured it out, too.

Man, I gotta' try that one in a debate some time.

Ummmm... you have to go on 'my memory' on that one? I mean for real? No other method of determining someone was wrong about the world-ending apocalypse came to mind other than 'my memory'?

Skeptical about what? People and stupid/crazy ideas that revolve around religion, moon landings, 9-11, the Illuminati, odd rainbows in the water coming out of a hose in the back yard that determine government mind control agents in the water supply, etc? There's a 'we' group organized to be be skeptical about that stuff?

I thought it was just common sense that people are crazy in myriad ways.

Yep... but luckily there's a 'we' group that's gonna stop this sort of thing on all fronts! Or maybe it's just yet another tired, intellectually thin 'neener neener' at Christianity, by yet another person/group that holds such mundane tripe to be damnatory and clever?

As long as I can have my pets look after when the Rapture happens, I'll be fine.

Edit: Well, what do you know!

Guess I'd better get baptized before the big J comes back and sends me to the lake of fire when my name isn't written down in his big book.

As long as it's the version narrated by David Attenborough and not a U.S. celebrity, I'm all for it!

Why, yes. Yes, there is.

Like I said, all will be revealed in time.

In the interest of fairness, I am less militant atheist than benevolently agnostic skeptic. I don't know, and neither do you. I am, however, as offended as you are at me when I see this kind of nonsense foisted on the community and especially on one as desperate as where I'm at now.

If my dog isn't going to Heaven then it's not going to be true Heaven!

And should we be allowing the musings of crazy people imagining when Jesus is going to come back (again) in the world events forum? I thought this was for actual stuff going on in the world.

To a lot of the world, that IS what is going on, or at least the prism through which they view it.

It's a catch-22. If there are dogs in heaven then it won't be a true heaven for me.

Dogs riding horses in heaven. Keeps me up at night and shakes my faith.

Wow, it may be a cult dedicated to debunking, but JREF looks as cult-like as any religious cult. Shouldn't there at least be a short "About Us" paragraph before begging for money in the "Season of Reason™"? I don't think Joseph Randi will be seeing my money.

Shhhh... you'll shake his faith in the group, leader, and belief system he has subscribed to, that's not at all like religion of course.

Re: May 21, 2011 - down the hatch, Planet Earth!

At the tiny Mormon-heavy private school I attended, this doomsday crap was always getting pushed at us. I remember when my religion teacher, an otherwise cool guy that all the students loved, told us (in February 1982) that Christ was coming back on April 6, 1982 (the anniversary of the church's formation in 1830).

On April 6, 1982, he was not at school. Obviously, neither was Christ.

On April 7, 1982, he returned to school. His "prophecy" was never mentioned again. But since this kind of thing happened just about weekly in that church and its offshoots, it was just the most memorable of many for me.

Good news for John Randi and Jacob Randi, who still apparently have a shot at OldDude's money.
