North Korea Bombs South Korean Island

Here we go again

SEOULóNorth Korea fired artillery rockets at South Korea's Yeonpyeong island Tuesday afternoon, setting houses on fire in its small villages and injuring several people.

Photos sent to South Korean TV stations by residents of nearby So-yeonpyeong island showed multiple plumes of smoke rising over its larger neighbor.

South Korea returned fire and 14 of its soldiers were injured, military officials said. The military dispatched fighter jets to the area. A spokesman for South Korea's Joint Chief of Staff said "scores of rounds" were fired by the North.

"The whole neighborhood is on fire," said Na Young-ok, a 46-year-old woman who has lived on the island for 20 years. She was reached at a bomb shelter when reached by The Wall Street Journal. "I think countless houses are on fire, but no fire truck is coming. We have a fire station but the shots are intermittently coming."

Is this a regular occurrence? I would think this would be cause for war.

NK and ROK take shots at each other but never with anything larger than small arms.

Artillery is new.

I'm curious to see what ROK hits back with.

It's reported that South Korea has asked the U.S. for tactical nuclear weapons - not as a result of this incident.

One thing is obvious - the policy of depending on China to 'control' the North Koreans has failed miserably. The new report says their nuclear enrichment program is far more advanced than is the Iranians. I wouldn't be surprised if it came to light that the Chinese were helping them advance.

It's good to hear good news sometimes - isn't it?

Not to worry - the U. S. has asked the North Koreans to renew the talks.

I knew we would come through with something concrete.

Shouldn't they wait until 2012 to start a big stinkin' war?

There will be hell to pay, on account of a South Korean missile briefly distracting Kim Jong Il as he was putting for a final score of -37. Concern is that the distraction may be evidence of mortality, whereas the state-run media was quick to point out that the Supreme Leader was forced to choose between making the putt or diverting the weapon with his powers.

Didn't George W take North Korea off of the "axis of evil" list in 2008? I always wondered what back room bullshit made him do that.

Who has the technological edge? To paraphrase Walter Sobchak: Is this just a bunch of guys trying to find reverse on a soviet tank?

North Korea's margine of tanks, submarines, artillery doesn't mean much if it's anitquated cold war shit.

Re: North Korea Bombs South Korean Island

military hardware is useless if it's broke

when i was in the army in some units they made us drive the vehicles a few miles a week because if it just sits in the motor pool then it starts to break and leak all the time. to drive vehicles you need fuel, which NK has very little of.

same thing with tanks, they are useless if you can't shoot straight. the US army has a very good gunnery program for armored vehicle crews. for that you need ammo, fuel and all other kinds of supplies that NK probably doesn't have.

unless NK has a good training program for it's military, it's just numbers on paper. it's not like artillery magically finds the targets. people have to read maps, relay the information and the crews have to do the math to properly align the guns to fire on the right spot

According to wiki, south korea has 200+ F15 & F16 (plus numerous older F4/F5), versus the North's approx 40 Mig-29, their only modern fighter (plus they also have numerous old mig-17/19/21/23. Really little chance of the north getting air superiority. Unless the north was able to blitzkrieg the south, I'd imagine the south and US would be able to destroy a lot of the heavy armor and artillery from the air.

Re: North Korea Bombs South Korean Island

Same disputed area where last March, the North allegedly sank a South Korean warship. Kindda silly for the South to hold military exercises in that area again, knowing how quick on the "provocation trigger" the North is.
