Police officer guarding Mr Obama's Mumbai hotel accidentally shoots himself

It's extremely inaccurate for people to say that the gun "went off" or that it "misfired."

What did happen is that a human being caused the gun's trigger to be pulled, and the gun did exactly what it was designed to do.

Police officer guarding Mr Obama's Mumbai hotel sparks security alert after accidentally shooting himself in the leg

November 7, 2010

A policeman guarding Mr Obama's Mumbai hotel set off a major security alert after accidentally shooting himself in the leg last night.

The gunshot sparked chaos as Secret Service agents rushed to protect the U.S. president.

An alert was sounded as Mr Obama, his wife and daughters were preparing for a private dinner inside the hotel.

The injured officer, Suhas Chowdhury, 49 - a 20-year veteran of the Mumbai police - had been guarding the perimeter of the hotel when his gun went off at the end of his shift.

Speaking from his hospital bed, he said: 'I was changing my uniform when [my revolver got stuck in my trousers and misfired a round.

'The bullet brushed my left thigh, luckily it didn't cause any major injury.' An investigation has been launched.

It doesn't seem like a very substantial story politically. Is the point only to make a semantic argument about how the media chose to describe an accidental discharge incident?

I think his point is that in two previous Obama accidental discharge incidents, the President was burdened with children, and America can't really bear the weight of supporting a third child in the white house in the current economy.

Perhaps he was laughing at Obama's ridiculous assertion that Indians are not poaching American jobs. People who aren't laughing? The thousands of Americans who have been laid off in favor of somebody else doing the job in India.

I had actually considered posting it in the "other" forum.

Yes, my point is about semantics. It was a human being, not the gun or trousers, that caused the gun to fire.

Fair enough. It seems like it is pretty normal to use phrasing that minimizes the perception of personal culpability. It's sort of like blaming a Toyota for not stopping when you have your foot firmly pressed down on the accelerator.

Re: Police officer guarding Mr Obama's Mumbai hotel accidentally shoots himself

As Plaxico Burress was being led into a VIP area, with a drink in his hand, the gun slipped down his pants leg. He reached for the weapon, but fumbled it and it went off, sources said. The bullet tore through Burress' already injured right thigh, police said.
Seems like a rather common way to describe an accidental discharge to me.

The police officer in question was probably distracted by Michelle Obama's unsleeved arms when he accidentally discharged his weapon.

Re: Police officer guarding Mr Obama's Mumbai hotel accidentally shoots himself

No. It's a joke about how I created a wikipedia article called "Michell Obama's Arms." The article has since been deleted from wikipedia.

Before it was deleted, I added its content to the article "Michelle Obama." That content was deleted, but it's archived here:

Michelle Obama's arms

Michelle Obama's left arm, front, along with Barack Obama, left, and Michelle Obama, right

Michelle Obama's arms are notable enough to have received much national media attention. In March 2009, the Boston Globe compared the notability of Obama's arms to that of the mortgage crisis and the high rate of unemployment. [109]

According to CNN, there are blogs which file daily reports on Obama's clothing choices. She appeared sleeveless on the covers of People magazine and Vogue magazine, as well as at the president's joint session of Congress. CNN reported that Obama's arms have become a "trademark" and "a source of inspiration for some women." [110]

The Chicago Sun-Times, the Seattle Times, and CNN have all published separate articles with exercise advice on how readers could get their arms to resemble Obama's. [111][112][110]

The New York Times compared the fashion notability of Obama's bare arms to that of Nancy Reagan's spangled ballgowns and Barbara Bush's fake pearls. [113]

The Washington Post wrote of Obama's arms: "When she bounded onto the stage in her sleeveless dresses, with her muscular post-Title IX arms in full view, the definition of a strong woman changed." [114]

The Chicago Tribune wrote that Obama's arms have "nicely toned biceps and triceps." [115]

MSNBC wrote of Obama's arms: "In modern times when we are dealing with headlines about obesity epidemics to anorexic models on the runway -- a first lady who is fit, healthy, active and takes pride in working out should be a role model." [116]

Obama's arms appear in her official White House portrait. [117]

Controversy over her arms

It has been suggested that Obama's arms have too much muscle and not enough fat, although it has also been acknowledged that what constitutes these things is a matter of personal opinion. [118]

The Los Angeles Times wrote that Obama's arms may be "intimidating and unsettling to some who are used to seeing first ladies more covered up." [118]

Obama has also been criticized for going sleeveless during subzero temperatures in the middle of winter. [110]

Obama's bare arms have been criticized for allegedly being too informal during serious events. [119]

The really outrageous thing is that this one incompetent guard is costing U.S. taxpayers $195 million/day.
