The African elections and politics thread

on Sunday?

Will it be the sitting president Gbagbo, one of the two partners, Ouattara or Bedie, or the extreme longshot Wodie?

Or will the elections once again be cancelled?

Equally importantly, will the elections bring the stability and peace so long sought after? And for my sweet tooth, will chocolate prices fall?

Since we surely are all on the edge of our seats, I thought some discussion was warranted.

I'm happy you found a new way to pass the time with your cats, but does it really warrant a thread?

Well, I no longer drink alcohol, so...

By the way, I predict shenanigans to take place and for Gbagbo to win and avoid a runoff. Violence to follow. Hopefully I am wrong.

I'm pulling for Ouattara, if only so that we're not the only country where people are shouting for the President to produce his real birth certificate.

(Realistically, I don't like any of the choices and I'm glad I don't live in that country, which we are apparently not naming).

I hate to see Bedie win after the tactics he employed in '95, but I think he will prevail.

If Gbagbo loses, he will refuse to relinquish power (which he technically lost in 2005...) and violence will ensue. Then he will rename the country The Ebony Coast just to piss off the French.

I also would like to see Mr. Ouattara win, if for nothing other than an affinity for his area of expertise. I do believe that he would be able to somewhat bring together the north and south, and set up policies that will encourage badly needed investment, particularly in the cocoa sector.

Unfortunately, there are a couple of differences between America and Ivory Coast regarding birth certificates. All voters must prove their legal status there, and Mr. Ouattara already has, repeatedly, shown his birth certificate. This is unlike America.

And I didn't believe I needed to state the obvious about where I was talking about, plus this allows us to use the same thread next week as well. (Guinea).

There are only two possible outcomes, neither of which is Gbagbo losing. He either wins with over the needed 50%, or he is in the top two and the election goes to a runoff.

And can he piss of the French more than he already has?

There is some some speculation that I may be, that Gbagbo has assurances from the other two leading candidates that they and their followers will accept the outcome of the elections peacefully. I just don't know/believe if Ouattara will be able to control the New Forces if fraud is suspected.

Now I feel like a slacker for not starting a 2010 Australian election thread.

So far, so good. There have been no outbreaks of violence and voters have been able to cast their ballots with only minor delays.

re: So, who wins the [Africa] election...

I know there wasn't the same level of excitement and anticipation, but Tanzania also peacefully and successfully held presidential elections earlier today. Most have expected President Kikwete to win relatively handily, however high voter turnout could bring Mr. Slaa and his message of hope and change to power, or at least to a runoff election.

Regardless, it was good to see.

And on a personal note, could one of our good moderators please insert [Africa] into the thread title?

....

Thanks.

The two big tests coming up are Guinea and CAR. Though nobody really expects CAR to go off as scheduled. There is always hope though.

You forgot the election in Brazil. Although that one was pretty much a slam dunk.

Lastly, at least for this past week, it will be interesting to see the voter turnout in Niger's constitutional referendum. One provision which would likely be of interest to our own Ky-Fi as it implements a separation of Islam and state in a predominantly Muslim nation.

Curious as to the similarities with former president Tandja and a few of the leaders in our own hemisphere. Wonder if he had the same vocal supporters?

I didn't realise Brazil was on the African continent.

Besides, as you stated there wasn't much suspense there. Though I would have obviously voted differently. And I was somewhat surprised that Ms. Silva did not perform a little better in the first round.
