How much money would the US Government save?

If next year they closed the borders, allowed exports but not imports, recalled all their foreign diplomats, brought back home all the troops around the world(stopped playing World Cop) and didn't send aid to any country and banned work from leaving our country?

Re: How much money would the US Government save?

We'd lose money simply by not allowing imports. We'd lose a lot of money.

Hello, Monroe. Still pimping that old doctrine of yours, eh?

None because they'd just spend it all (and more)?

That's not the Monroe doctrine. That's (Robert) Taft Republicanism, only to an extreme degree that would have made even Taft recoil in horror.

Re: How much money would the US Government save?

Closing the Mexican border is estimated to cost trillions of dollars. Enforcing the border would cost money, not save money.

If we stopped imports, retail spending would plummet becasue there would be nothing to sell. All our shit is made in China.

If your Ipod was made in America it would cost $45,000.

Foriegn diplomats clear the way for our companies to make money in other countries. Big American companies that employ millions of Americans (like Coke and McDonalds) make 75% or more of their money overseas.

Your idea is bad.

If Obama proposed this, I'm sure the republicans would shoot it down, saying it was all just a ploy for Government Motors to sell more cars...

Re: How much money would the US Government save?

I've heard imported oil is actually cheaper than Alaskan oil. Foreign tankers can beeline straight across the ocean to our refineries. Alaskan oil has to go all the way down to Panama canal and back up again which actually makes it more expensive because of the transport costs. Just something I heard.

Quie simply, our economy would be destroyed. Read Adam Smith sometime, especially the parts dealing with competitive advantage. You block imports into this country, you start a trade war. And since we don't manufacture for shit, we're left with a bunch of agriculture nobody will take. At least we won't starve.

Regarding foreign aid: people bitch about the billions of dollars we send to Israel, but they fail to realize that most of it (70-80%, I believe) is earmarked for buying American products (mainly arms).

I've wondered if the Feds would gain/save much if they sold off the entire interstate system to private companies to convert into toll roads. I'd also expect that to trim down America's oil demand and greenhouse crap.

Re: How much money would the US Government save?

Guys, I have a great idea. What if we continue to import goods, but—and this is the kicker—we trick other countries and don't pay for them. That way we can continue to export goods and make money, and import goods for free. In the unlikely even that you find a flaw in this idea, please reply.

I too think America should return to the economic thought of the 17th century! You should be competing with India in no time!
