You hope this ridiculous nut does something that is virtually guaranteed to increase attacks against our troops and make our already difficult mission in Afghanistan even harder?

Re: Islam and the West Part II: Quran Burning Edition

Why didn't you mention Iraq?

How about our troops stationed in Korea?

How about those stationed in Europe?

Aren't you concerned that this action would virtually guarantee increased attacks on our troops?

Nothing like a little book burning to show what America is all about!

Of course he has the right to do it (well he was denied a burn permit by the city of Gainesville). I respect his right to do it. I don't think he should be arrested, but he's a complete ass in my opinion.

Of course they have the right to burn books. Just as much as the stupid people protesting the mosque had the right to protest it. And best of all, I have the right to call them all stupid (although 'stupid' is treating the book-burners lightly).

I don't think it will be interesting at all.

It's not just a book.

Can't you bring yourself to call it by name?

I agree.

Truly what a great demonstration on how America allows political speech and expression, no matter how idiotic and/or reprehensible it may be. Allowing it, yet heaping condemnation upon it from all sides, demonstrating loudly and clearly that these offensive and buffoonish acts are the thoughts and actions of an incredibly small fringe minority, a minority who America, the nation and her people, do not agree with. Illuminating a minority who never has any hope of ever approaching mainstream thought, let alone obtaining any governmental or societal influence.

Since that certainly can not always have been said of many nations where demonstrations have taken place, what a great lesson in America this could actually turn out to be.

And the parallels to Nazi Germany's book burnings are just an added bonus.

I support him in the same way I support the right of the German-American Bund to hold torch-light marches.

Come to that, I think he should be rewarded for his courage. The State Department should send him on a tour of the Mid East. I'm sure he'll be shown a wonderul time in Riyahd.

re: Musulmans and the Occident Part II or Whatever

I'm not a religious person at all... but I grew up Muslim. I started learning about Islam at an early age to about 16 or 17 years old. I went to a Catholic high school and college, where I learned a lot about Christianity. I'm very interested in religion and faith in general so I've taken time to learn about Judaism, Buddhism and Hinduism (even Greek and Roman mythology, which is pretty much an ancient religion).

And the one, single conclusion I've made through all the readings I've done is that organized religion is the single biggest detriment to the advancement of our society. All this recent news just solidifies my stance.

Faith is good. Religion is bad.

That's just a slightly more specific way of saying that people are good but institutions are bad, which might be true, but isn't all that helpful, since institutions are inevitable.

I'm hoping that the majority of Americans do not agree with what he is doing, but until I start seeing some poll numbers, I will remain on the fence.

As for me, I support his right to do it, but disagree with it strongly.

Hillary Clinton is 'blasting' away at the pastor for what he is contemplating.

I'm opposed to what he's doing, but should the Secretary of State be sticking her nose in this?

I'm also wondering whether some of our members would be so opposed to his actions if it were a Muslim cleric burning The New Testament?

Just asking.
