Thought Crime! Manga porn conviction.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news...-obscene-manga

http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/201...iled-6-months/

A U.S. comic book collector is being sentenced to six months in prison after pleading guilty to importing and possessing Japanese manga books depicting illustrations of child sex and bestiality.

Christopher Handley was sentenced in Iowa on Thursday, (.pdf) almost a year after pleading guilty to charges of possessing “obscene visual representations of the sexual abuse of children.”

The 40-year-old was charged under the 2003 Protect Act, which outlaws cartoons, drawings, sculptures or paintings depicting minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct, and which lack “serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.” Handley was the nation’s first to be convicted under that law for possessing cartoon art, without any evidence that he also collected or viewed genuine child pornography.

Without a plea deal with federal authorities, he faced a maximum 15-year sentence.

Apparently Handley knows the difference between fantasy and reality, but the State of Iowa doesn't.

I hope I never have to explain to a Jury that, although the fairies frolicking in my artwork may look like children, they are actually ancient creatures thousands of years old.

And, I am NOT ditching my Sulamith Wulfing paintings.

The real question is, does reading this stuff mean the guy is dangerous to anyone? I think, no.

Essentially, he's being jailed for bad taste in comics.

This is absurd. How did the state of Iowa determine that these manga have no artistic merit?

I enjoy some comics (make mine Marvel), but always hated that this "stuff" for pedosexuals was available almost everywhere (check it out at your local mall bookstore). I see no "aesthetic" appeal to it; the art is horrid, the stories are awful....but being against censorship, I suppose I'd be alright with them exisiting...except that it seems a mighty close link to pedophilia in style, if nothing else.

Put it this way: I doubt there are too many pedophiles reading this garbage, as I think the average manga fan holds his teddybear close at night....but I'll also bet there are many dangerous pedophiles who just love it.
And American comic books are all superhero crap for kids or adults with a serious spandex fetish. Seriously though, are you talking about all manga? I'm pretty sure that manga fans don't just fall into the two categories of teddy bear huggers and dangerous pedophiles. Can you give me some examples from your local mall bookstore, which presumably won't carry the kinds of stuff talked about in this article?

Middle America looking at Asian art. What do you expect?

Disclaimer: I don't read manga, anime or anything like that. But I don't see much artistic merit in anything that depicts minors in sexual situations

Just for clarity, Manga is an entire canvass description of Japanese animation. There are several different kinds of Manga.

Goggled Manga and the pictures were pretty tame. Googled Manga Porn, and they were pretty weird, but I didn't see anything that looked "pedo" style. Gals in pain with oversized boobs, being impailed by oversized dicks....or other oversized things.

Manga is basically the Japanese term for comic books. Anime is basically the Japanese term for animation.

But yes, manga is very diverse. American comics are also very diverse (once one looks past the superheroes), but manga brings diversity to another level, covering all kinds of topics that appeal to a wide variety of people. And yes, there is some sick stuff out there, but there is sick stuff done in the Western style too. I was just surprised at the blanket statement made by a fan of Western comics, especially because comic fans are pretty much derided here, and they went through their own censorship issues dating back to "Seduction of the Innocent" and the fall of EC comics back in the 50s.

"Minors"? You don't think there's any artistic merit to depicting high school students realistically? You object to Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Porky's, American Pie, and most of the books marketed to "young adults"?

If you said "children," you'd have a better point, though still not a good one. You'd be excluding Lolita (guy wants to bang a 12 year old), Peter Straub's Houses Without Doors (features a story about a kid who skips school, goes to the movies, and gets molested by a creepy old guy, but then can't tell anyone because he'd be admitting to skipping school), Stephen King's IT (a bunch of 12 year olds gang bang a girl), and South Park (too many to count).
