Marine's dad ordered to pay protesters' court fees

I'm all for free speech but this has got to stop. As we all know there's a line for everything and I think the courts have got this all wrong..

Marine's dad ordered to pay protesters' court fees

BALTIMORE - The father of a Marine killed in Iraq and whose funeral was picketed by anti-gay protesters from Kansas was ordered to pay the protesters' appeal costs, his lawyers said Monday.

On Friday, Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit ordered Snyder to pay $16,510 to Fred Phelps. Phelps is the leader of Topeka's Westboro Baptist Church, which conducted protests at Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder's funeral in 2006.

The two-page decision supplied by attorneys for Albert Snyder of York, Pa., offered no details on how the court came to its decision.

Attorneys also said Snyder is struggling to come up with fees associated with filing a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court.

The decision adds "insult to injury," said Sean Summers, one of Snyder's lawyers.

The high court agreed to consider whether the protesters' message is protected by the First Amendment or limited by the competing privacy and religious rights of the mourners.

Thankfully this is the kind of story that usually results in donors helping out. Hate to see a dime go to that slime though.

The Phelps are uncivilized. I'm please that I've provided you your word of the day. Can you write it in cursive?

I think so. IIRC, there was another post on the board, maybe in the SCOTUS thread, about the case being appealed to the Supreme Court. The short article in this thread made a mention of it as well.

If that is the case, this is an example of tort reform at its worst.

No, pussies because people who deserve an ass-kicking can't receive one without the ass-kicker getting into trouble.

^ You know, there are plenty of countries around the world that allow that to happen. My bet is that you really wouldn't want to live in any of them.

not that i agree with the protesters, but it's impossible for congress and local governments to codify every possible scenario into law to make sure everything is always fair. and the father probably had a crappy lawyer

...a court today (Monday) rules that having had his $5 million verdict tossed out, the father of Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew A. Snyder must now pay Phelps legal costs.

It would probably have been cheaper to beat the assholes down and pay that fine.

What, so he was suing them, and his case was thrown out? While I despise Phelps, I'm not sure he or anyone else should be subject to legal costs every time someone tries to sue him?

I am now convinced that Lemmy is a hard core neo-con hawk who happens to love Obama for some other, unrelated to politics, reason.

Re: Marine's dad ordered to pay protesters' court fees

I took part in a protest against them, it was a panzy one I guess, as we just blocked them from view and made sure nobody got into any fights as that's what they want. This wasn't at a funeral though, just a general "colleges are totally gay" protest.

The best part was when the frat house across the street wheeled out their big speakers and started blaring Born in the USA.

The correct decision. As pointed out on a legal blog I read, the right to free speech is meaningless if one has to go into bankruptcy fighting lawsuits from people who don’t like the content.

Interesting to note, 22 states have either enacted or or working to enact laws that limit the rights of protesters at funerals. As big of a dirtbag as Phelps is, I'm not sure I am in love with the idea of these laws either. Slippery slope, if nothing else.

A University of Illinois-Chicago student recently suggested an effective way to deal with WBC.

That shit's just not acceptable in any way to me.
Isn't that really the modus operandi of the WBC...they instigate and hope someone attacks them, then sues them for damages?

I agree completely. Something I've always said: I would never burn a flag, and I would never be friends with someone who would, but I will die for your right to do so.
