2010 Census

Yesterday I received a letter in the mail telling me in about a week I'd get my census packet and I should fill it out.

Thank you federal govt for such a good use of tax payer money. Also thank you for protecting the environment through such a necessary use of energy to deliver this vital letter.

What do you suggest the alternative should be?

Re: 2010 Census

Yeah, I got the same letter.

'We are sending something in the mail to notify you that you will soon be receiving something in the mail.'

I'm sure they are merely complying with an archaic law.

I got something in the mail yesterday, but haven't opened it yet. Thanks for saving me the trouble!

Re: 2010 Census

They could do the advance notification by email, but you know someone would use "Reply All" to complain....

I got something from them too, but it was a notification that they were hiring.

Yesterday we also got a letter from AT&T asking us to switch to their internet and long distance. We already have AT&T internet and long distance.

Waste? Inefficiency? In business?

Just send the census package and not a preview letter.

Re: 2010 Census

And I posted twice in this thread - I could have combined them into a single post!

Waste? Inefficiency? By me?

I'm expecting several followup letters to arrive even after sending the census form back in. And yes, I could just about build a fort out of all of the advertisements AT&T sends me, even though I already have almost one of every service they have.

Nice.

I've come to the realization that neither the public nor the private sector have monopolies on waste, inefficiency, greed, stupidity, etc.

I received the letter also, but I gave it to NORML54601 and he smoked it.

Re: 2010 Census

I believe the government is spending somewhere around 1/3 of a billion dollars on advertising letting people know that there's a census. There were even census ads during the Super Bowl and in fortune cookies. I suppose these letters (I got one yesterday too) are just part of that.

Didn't the census used to be mostly concerned with the apportionment of representatives? Now it seems to mostly deal with how much money gets spent where. Thus the big money spent on getting an accurate count of everyone to spend money on.

Re: 2010 Census

I could use some extra money, and the Census actually pays well, so I decided to take the employment test Saturday. My fellow test-takers were a bunch of mouth-breathers who didn't understand the concept of cross-streets and were unsure whether or not they had ever been in the military.

I called to get my score and someone had to fill out a form to tell someone to look it up and call me back. It'll "only" take a couple of days for me to get that call.

Re: 2010 Census

For my area: Census takers start at: $18.75/hour

Pretty good for a side job.

Re: 2010 Census

I wish they'd stop being such teases. Just give me the damn census form so I can fill out the constitutionally required information about how many people live here and then lie on the invasive questions that they have no right to ask.

They're not doing the long form anymore.

Yep, same here. Could probably pull in $2K working part-time for 6 weeks.

I also got the preview letter. Looking forward to getting the census. This time I think I'll be a 67-year-old Puerto Rican woman.

Re: 2010 Census

The census take came by my house - twice. She got the wrong address the first time. I got nothing in the mail.

Correction: Maybe I did receive something in the mail. I guess I threw it away.
