How many people lost their unemployment benefits today?

I know what its like. Back in Jan. 2002 my benefits ran out because one Mr. Tom Daschle thought that taking a XMAS break was more important than passing unemployment extensions. Call Jim Bunning would be the best bet.

Re: How many people lost their unemployment benefits today?

Was this an extension to go beyond how ever many weeks there currently were, or is it something different?

Some federal workers were furloughed because of the impasse.

If you are no longer receiving benefits does the government still consider you unemployed?

After a period of time you're not considered in the statistics.

Quite a few, I imagine. Or is the argument being made that these should last indefinitely until the financial crisis is considered over?

Not sure how long they should last, but it certainly should be a long time.

Problem with a long time - you might get folks used to receiving the government benefit, and they cease to actively look for a job. People have been known to change their lifestyle.

Very true - but what else can you do? Can't just cut everyone off because some people will abuse the system.

So how long is too long? And how long are they currently?

Perhaps until the unemployment numbers start to fall to a reasonable level. Cutting off benefits would only make a bad situation worse.

In Michigan I think the max is 99 weeks. I know someone who got laid-off last yr and is probably is close to retirement so this was a blessing in disguise.

Wasn't another Unemployment extension put in with the jobs bill that was just passed?

Why not blame the Senate Majority Leader?

All he has to do is bring a cloture motion to the floor. I'm reasonably certain the 60 votes are there.

The problem is that a cloture vote takes time. I think from the time you call for cloture until final passage of the bill, the mandatory waiting periods add up to four or five days, whereas if you can convince Senator Bunning to stand down, you can pass the bill immediately.

None of which is meant to argue with your larger point, which is that Senator Reid is a spectacularly ineffective leader when it comes to parliamentary maneuvering. For example, there was no reason whatsoever for the Senate to go into recess over the weekend.

Re: How many people lost their unemployment benefits today?

If a group of Repubs (only one apparently has a name ) can't get him to stand down, I don't believe Reid will be successful.

I'm been watching the 'debate' on the senate floor. Reid said he can't match Bunning's curve ball or fast ball or his 40 grandchildren.

btw: Bunning did a pretty good curve ball.

It's a real pain to listen to Bunning speak.

Re: How many people lost their unemployment benefits today?

I wonder if anyone is actually trying to work out a way to do what Bunning has demanded: pay for the extension with an equal cut in spending elsewhere.

Citizens Against Government Waste reports that Kentucky got several hundred million in pork projects last year. It's not enough to pay for the whole bill, but it's a start ...

Yes, punish the one guy who says we should actually pay for the things we want. That will make a better America.

Did CAGW say that Bunning was responsible for getting KY all of those projects? KY does have 2 Senators.

btw: I'm somewhat surprised that you are quoting CAGW.
