House sends extension of Patriot Act to Obama

WASHINGTON -- Key provisions of the nation's primary counterterrorism law would be extended for a year under a bill passed by the House Thursday evening after Democrats retreated from adding new privacy protections.

The House voted 315 to 97 to extend the USA Patriot Act, sending the bill to President Barack Obama. Without the bill, the provisions would expire Sunday.

The Senate approved the extension Wednesday. The privacy protections were cast aside when Senate Democrats lacked the necessary 60-vote supermajority to pass them. Thrown away were restrictions and greater scrutiny on the government's authority to spy on Americans and seize their records.

Does anybody know if Obama is expected to sign the extension?

I would imagine he'll sign it - wouldn't you?

There's very little doubt in my mind that he'll sign it.

I'm surprised they're still calling it the Patriot Act. Isn't the Patriot Act considered evil BusHitlerCo stuff?

I figured they'd rename it something like the New Horizons Act, slap on a tweaked Obama logo, and declare a victory for "Hope-n-Change".

That's one thing Obama has been consistent on. He has said all along that he favors the extension of the Patriot Act. He said it during the campaign; and, he said it before the campaign.

Maybe it's time for him to pick a fight with Congress. He may not be able to wait until it's a Congress controlled by the other party.

Pick & choose where you fight with Congress.

You don't fight when the House votes in excess of 3 to one for the measure.

Not if you want to overturn it. He probably doesn't.

Does it have a 1 trillion dollar earmark for some health care?

Change. 315-97. All this bitching about partisanship. Where's the partisanship when we need it?

Shocking: Ron Paul voted against the extension.

Re: House sends extension of Patriot Act to Obama

I can't find any polls that show whether most Americans approved or disapproved the extension.

I can't find any polls that show whether most Americans knew about the extension, or what provisions were being extended, or what the Patriot Act allows, or what limitations are contained in the Patriot Act ... but I have my guesses.

Re: House sends extension of Patriot Act to Obama

My guess is that most Americans would favor the extension - just a guess - an educated one, but just a guess.

I'm willing to call your assertion 'fact.' Carbon blobs.

I can't find a poll from the past 3 1/2 years dealing with the PATRIOT Act. I'll keep looking sporadically.

I disagree.
Spoiler:
I don't consider your guess to be very 'educated'

Re: House sends extension of Patriot Act to Obama

I don't even know why they would poll Americans. They should just poll Americans with a valid opinion - Manhattanites.

But really -- do people who live north of 14th Street really have any right to have an opinion on this? It was really only Lower Manhattan that was affected by 9/11.

I was home when I posted earlier. Took off work early (and using vacation time) as any proud American should to root for the USA hockey team. My opinion here therefore counts.

Re: House sends extension of Patriot Act to Obama

A little off topic: I haven't seen any of the winter olympics. I seem to recall when it was the U. S. vs. USSR that we 'kept score' by how many gold medals each won. The reason was obvious. Do we still do that, or have we switched to total medals?

That isn't off topic at all.
