8 percent of Americans want the members of Congress re-elected

http://news.yahoo.com/s/bloomberg/20...g/aesowriv31_g
Feb. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Just 8 percent of Americans want the members of Congress re-elected, according to a CBS News-New York Times poll taken nine months before roughly one-third of the Senate and the entire House face voters.
The Feb. 5-10 survey found 81 percent of respondents saying the lawmakers shouldn’t receive another term.
By 80 percent to 13 percent, Americans said members of Congress are more interested in serving special interests than the people they represent.
Also, 75 percent disapproved of the job Congress is doing, the highest level since 74 percent said they disapproved in October 2008. Congress’s job approval rating was 15 percent in the current survey; it was 12 percent in October 2008.
I predict that 95% of Congress and 80% of the Senate will be re-elected.

Of course they will be mostly re-elected.

The weak-minded fools in this country fall in lockstep with whatever Orwell's sheep tell them to do.

Yet these fools keep sending their incumbents back time and time again. I think mine is on his 10th term or something like that and he's a corrupt idiot.

Mine has his seat for life. I can't imagine him losing it. I will vote against him again this fall.

"Vote the bums out! Except for MY guy, he's the exception."

I'm part of the problem. My congressman needs to go, but both the opposition candidate and the third party candidate are well-documented nutjobs. Unless somebody else comes forward that's more viable, I'll probably vote him back in.

That's what pissed me off. There was a great candidate running in my district's GOP primary in '08 and he got beat by a 2-1 margin by a Huckabee type who then got trounced by the incumbent in the general. I ended up writing in the name of that primary loser in the general election.

My congressman represents the district well.

I don't agree with him all that often, but I'm in the minority in the district. I don't vote for him.

Make congress like jury duty, I say. Sure the morons will be running the joint, but the morons are currently running the joint.

I like my Congressman. He is very moderate for a MA democrat. If I lived a few miles down the street, however, I would be represented by Barney Frank.

I'd love to see the threads here.

"Dammit, I got the dreaded letter today. Any tips to get out of serving in Congress for the next two years?"

I'd rather have Barney as my Congressman. At least he's pro gambling.

Same thing will likely happen to Rand Paul here. I thought he had a chance but he is basically running as a Libertarian on the GOP ticket and it isnt likley going to work for him. A co worker of mine said she liked him till she heard he wants to close Gitmo.....

As I've said....Rand Paul has no chance. The GOP will flood money to his opponent to ensure his demise. Then they'll end up getting fucked in the general.

I doubt the GOP will have problems in the general election. The Dems have strong candidates, but the other GOP candidate is the Sec. of State and is fairly popular here. Obama lost this state in 08 and is even more unpopular now than then. Just my humble opinion.

I agree with this. Make people more aware of what it takes to run this country, and then they might be more proactive.

Then he'll have to beat Paul and avoid alienating the libertarians/fiscal conservatives and tea partiers (which I'm sure are numerous in KY) so much that they don't turn out in the general.

This was basically the Athenian model, that created democracy.

True democracy run by citizens. All qualified voters voted on every aspect of governing. No elected body had the power, the people did directly. Though 1000 or so(IIRC) were selected by lot, and a few by a type of election, to serve in offices of the government, including the military leadership.

All the citizens had a direct understanding of their government, and its functioning, and the effects on their lives. Even those who served in offices had to go back and live under what they created after a year(IIRC).

Re: 8 percent of Americans want the members of Congress re-elected

I don't want a pure democracy.

Nothing will get done.

Some states have it in their constitution that you can't do certain things - things that should be left to the legislature and the governor - without an affirmative vote from the voters. Just multiply that by 50.

The representative democracy has served us pretty well for a couple of hundred years.

But how did you feel when it was first proposed? Has seeing it in action changed your opinion?

OK then, how about term limits on members of Congress?

That's even a worse idea.

People in the district like their congressman - the vast majority do. You may not like the congresman in another district, but he/she is not representing you.

Re: 8 percent of Americans want the members of Congress re-elected

instead of term limits, make them congressmen for life. I wonder how they'd legislate if they knew that instead of getting voted out of office, they'd be targets for assassination.
