"Poll: Majority of Republicans believe Obama is a 'socialist' "

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0210/32384.html

A new poll of self-identified Republicans released Tuesday shows a large slice of the GOP believes President Barack Obama is a “socialist” who was not born in this country, should be impeached, wants the terrorists to win and only won the 2008 election because ACORN “stole” it for him.

The survey of 2003 self-identified Republicans, who typically trend much more conservative than voters who “lean” Republican, was conducted by Research 2000 for the liberal blog Daily Kos.

According to the poll, 63 percent of Republicans believe Obama is a socialist; 39 percent think Obama should be impeached; 24 percent said Obama wants “the terrorists to win”; and 31 percent agreed with the statement that Obama is “a racist who hates white people.”

Those numbers are just a portion of the results from the poll that paints the GOP as much more socially conservative — and in some cases conspiratorial — than most analysts would be willing to grant.

According to the survey, 36 percent of respondents do not believe the president was born in this country, and 21 percent think the liberal advocacy group ACORN stole the election for Obama.

Meanwhile, nearly a quarter of the Republicans polled, 23 percent, want their state to secede from the union.

Those polled also showed strong opposition to the expansion of gay rights.

Fifty-five percent said gays should not be allowed to serve openly in the military, while 77 percent opposed gay couples getting married and 68 percent believe gay couples should not receive “any state or federal benefits.” In addition, 73 percent said openly gay men and women should not be allowed to teach in public schools.

On other social issues the findings were similar.

Fifty-one percent of those polled believe sex education should not be taught in schools; 77 percent want creationism taught in schools; 31 percent want contraception outlawed; and 34 percent believe birth control is “abortion.”

Those polled showed excitement for this fall’s midterm election, as 83 percent said they plan to vote.

Among those surveyed, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is the favorite candidate for the 2012 presidential election.

Sixteen percent said they’d vote for Palin, tops in the field, though 42 percent said they are undecided. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney placed second with 11 percent, followed by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, and South Dakota Sen. John Thune.

Asked whether they thought Palin is more qualified than Obama to serve as president, 53 percent said yes.
Am I missing something here... the way the first paragraph reads you'd think the majority of those polled believed the things that were being mentioned. In the article though only the "socialist" thing has the majority, the rest are in the 1/5 to 1/3 range of those polled. I guess that counts as a "large slice" but it seems to be overstating things IMHO. I guess I need to take the source of the poll and article into accoutn as well though...

I wonder what percentage of the respondents looked at the stupid questions, didn't take the poll seriously, and just gave a bunch of crazy answers.

Wow!

Obama leans pretty far left, and ACORN may have helped him steal the election. (I admit I don't know how he really feels about white people.)

I disbelieve most of the others and I'd vote Democrat before I'd vote Palin in 2012 (I have NEVER voted for a Democrat).

Re: "Poll: Majority of Republicans believe Obama is a 'socialist' "

Q: You favor an increase in the capital gains tax, saying, “I certainly would not go above what existed under Bill Clinton, which was 28%.” It’s now 15%. That’s almost a doubling if you went to 28%. Bill Clinton dropped the capital gains tax to 20%, then George Bush has taken it down to 15%. And in each instance, when the rate dropped, revenues from the tax increased. And in the 1980s, when the tax was increased to 28%, the revenues went down.

A: What I’ve said is that I would look at raising the capital gains tax for purposes of fairness.

I think it would be hard to argue that Obama is not a socialist.

Now, whether he's a very good socialist is up for debate.

I think those poll choices were a bit harsh. I mean, sure, I think he's a whitey-hating socialist foreigner who wants the terrorists to win and who should be impeached. But I think he would have won the election even without all the votes ACORN stole for him.

I'm sure if you had asked the Democrats "Is George Bush the son of Satan?" you'd have probably gotten a majority that said yes. Socialist is basically the same thing.

For what? I believe any president should be impeached who breaks the law. What law did the President (either of them) break?

It's somewhat disquieting that such a large number of Americans are so alienated from reality that they are unable to accept that a man like Barack Obama is just as much of an American, and just as representative of what America is, as they are.

It does seem irrational. What is especially disquieting to me is how the deficit and the unemployment numbers are hung squarely on his shoulders as if it's a rationalization for their dislike.

I don't think that "socialist" and "American" are mutually exclusive. But I think when he said on the campaign trail that taxes aren't about revenue, but are about "fairness," it revealed that he has socialist tendencies.

Re: "Poll: Majority of Republicans believe Obama is a 'socialist' "

50 percent of people are of below average intelligence, by definition, and "average" is really nothing to be proud of. Imagine what the lowest 35% or so are like. Actually, you don't have to imagine. You and I deal with them every day in public (not in this forum, of course). The fact that 35% of the people in any poll believe anything is really inconsequential. The article is pathetic and has no useful information--including the fact that 2/3 of people on the right think Obama is too far left. Is that really news, or is that just a bell curve shifted by one standard deviation, and therefore, expected rather than unusual?

Oh hell...

Most Americans are complete and utter fools. The largest majority is what I mean by that - 'most'. The few who have above-retard intellectual resources are so weak-minded they will believe anything they are told to for the most part.

Whether a sizable majority is so abysmally ignorant as to think somehow a president and vice president could funnel "billions in oil money" out of Iraq in a 'war for oil' into secret bank accounts(or any other number of things), or that Barack Obama is some foreigner and a closet commie who wants terrorists to 'win'(or etc), it's all the same thing.

Weak-minded fools spouting out - often with a little 'twist' of their own stupid flavour added in - what they were told to think by people with an agenda and the power to shape and deliver information.

Did he get anything wrong? I would consider one-third, one-quarter, or even one-fifth of a population to be a large slice of that population. Nemein's the one who read the word "majority" into the opening paragraph.

One of my favorites. I don't think Obama is really any of those things, but he is about ideology first and his view of fairness trumps all else, including the economy.

You know, I started to write up a defense of fairness in the tax system, but then I thought "WTF!? Do I really need to explain to these people why fairness is a good thing? Am I talking to a bunch of kindergarteners?"

So, carry on, and good luck with your "Down with Fairness!" message this November.
