Would you want your child to grow up to be president?

It doesn't seem like long ago, POTUS was a carrot to dangle in front of a child, as in "if you work real hard and put your mind to it, you can grow up to be President."

But, I look at the POTUS as being probably one of the most highly stressful jobs possible. (Both Clinton & Bush seemed to age a lot more than eight years between their first inauguration and the end of their second terms). The money's not bad, but there are a lot of other jobs that pay even more. You give up your right to be a private citizen (secret service follows you around for the rest of your life).

And all that for knowing that a third of the country will be critical of everything you do and everything you say.

I am distrustful of anyone with aspirations to be President and I already fear the boy would just as soon kill me as kiss me, so I have to go with: no.

The only way my kid wiil be President is if the Presidency could be controlled by an xbox 360 controller. So unless that happends you are all safe.

I think it would be pretty cool. Although family get togethers would probably be at "his/her house."

I'd rather my kid be a Supreme Court Justice. Almost as much prestige (more in my eyes), almost as much pay, much shorter hours, much less stress, job for life.

I'd obviously hate the kid if he was President since that means he's a party stooge by default.

No, because A) he's an idiot; and B) my personal life might be inxestigated along with his.

Not even close. A random person could name many presidents, but how many Justices do you think they could name?

And yes - I think it was be amazing if one of my kids became president. And I could finally say that there is one politician that I like... well, depending on which kid it is....

I couldn't care less about name recognition amongst carbon blobs.

To you - but not to the vast majority of people.

Isn't that what I just said?

The carbon blobs think the cast of the Jersey Shore is prestigious.

Re: Would you want your child to grow up to be president?

Just depends on how you define "prestige."

I'll take Red Dog's prestige for my kids any day over fame.

Red Dog's definition of prestige, that is.

But if you asked most people what position holds more prestige - Justice or President, don't you think most people would answer President? That was my only point.

Re: Would you want your child to grow up to be president?

I didn't say it was "as" or "more" prestigious....I said it was almost as prestigious. To an intelligent informed non carbon blob, I believe that would be the predominant assessment.

Re: Would you want your child to grow up to be president?

Presidents are only president for 4-8 years. I think that the permanence of a Supreme Court Justice and their impact on history certainly weigh in the favor of their prestige. Whether it's more, less than, or close to that of a president is fairly irrelevant. It's a very different life, and prestigious indeed.

Between the two, I would of course want for my son whichever path he would choose. I wouldn't have any ill feelings toward either goal.

I understand what you are saying, I just happen to think you are wrong. No biggie.

For me, ever since Carter was President and seemed to age about 50 years over a 4-year span, the job has not looked at all appealing.

This. I'd rather my son become a used car salesman or *gasp* a lawyer. At least I'd know he had some ethics.

Is the prestige diminished when one is a sleazy male stripper too, like the late Earl Warren for instance?

I would not want my child to grow up to become the kind of person who would be capable of becoming President.
