Obama's State of the Union Address

Well Someone has to make the thread ...

Anyone want to take a shot at what he is going to talk about?

Re: Obama's State of the Union Address

Looks like he'll call for the end of "Don't Ask Don't Tell":

Washington (CNN) -- President Obama will ask Congress Wednesday night to repeal the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy that bars gays and lesbians from openly serving in, White House Senior Adviser David Axelrod told CNN. The request will be included in the president's State of the Union address, Axelrod said.

Obama's first State of the Union: What he will say vs. what he should say

So tonight Barack Obama gives his first State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress before millions at home muttering back at their TV's and a predictably partisan audience of House and Senate members following or ignoring the signals of the woman up front, this time likely wearing power red, Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California.

Re: Obama's State of the Union Address

Anyone have the Over/Under on how many times he'll refer to himself? In a speech earlier this week, the number was 132 times.

Re: Obama's State of the Union Address

I think his "Don't Ask Don't Tell" refers to asking when Gitmo will close.

I expect him to tell us what Americans are thinking. Because he's really in tune with that sort of thing. I don't know about you, but I can't wait to hear what I think about some of these things.

Edit: Okay, while I think the premise is silly, that video was pretty funny. Loved the shot at the end there.

Bush's 1989 and Clinton's 1993 messages are called "Administration Goals" speeches. G.W. Bush's 2001 speech is actually his "Budget Message," and President Obama delivered a similar non-State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress on February 24, 2009. For research purposes, it is probably harmless to categorize these as State of the Union messages since the impact of such a speech on public, media, and congressional perceptions of presidential leadership and power should be the same as if the address was an official State of the Union.

Re: Obama's State of the Union Address

It will be interesting to see how many people tune in. After well over a year of campaigning and telling us all the great stuff he would - and didn't win up doing, I'm not sure how many people are going to want to sit through a speech full of more of the same. Unless he's going to change the way he's changing.

Re: Obama's State of the Union Address

Reason.com's State of the Union drinking game. I take no responsibility if you die of alcohol poisoning halfway through the speech:

http://reason.com/blog/2010/01/27/so...links-play-alo

In theory, the State of the Union provides the president with the opportunity to address the nation, looking forward to the challenges ahead and reflecting on the year behind. But since that's so boring that I could barely type it out without falling into an earnestness-induced stupor, let's talk about the real reason we all care about the State of the Union: drinking games! Especially those that give SOTU-watchers the opportunity to look forward to the broken promises ahead and reflect on the year of gaffes, blame-shifting, and nonsense behind. Properly conducted, by the time the speech is over, you'll be roughly as coherent as a Ted Stevens speech about the Internet.

So watch carefully, then take a drink, and check the link, any time the president...

* falsely references "false choices."
* says "there are those who like to say."
* lies about health care.
* credits the stimulus for economic recovery (double shot if he confidently asserts that it will continue).
* claims to have rid Washington of special interests.
* blames Bush for policies he's perpetuated (try the war, spending, and Guantanamo for starters).

Just put a drop of liquor in a glass each time he says "I". Drink it when the glass gets full.

You'll be drunk in 10 minutes. Dead in 30.

Yeah, there will be a lot of "there are those" with a false factual statement that follows.

I'll be watching FSU/Duke and various other college hoops games. I don't waste my time with these bullshit speeches with dozens of standing Os for no good reason.

If that is repealed, doesn't that mean you can't be gay in the military? Or is he asking that it no longer be a reason to be booted from the military? I would guess that one, but he is also the dude that doesn't support gay marriage, so I'm not sure what he is saying.

Hopefully he recognizes that people care most about the economy, and he recognizes that his policies in that regard to not help the economy. I doubt it though. Ideologically, he has to do things that are bad for the economy.

HEALTH WARNING: For those participating in the drinking games you might want to pace yourself ... according this article http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100128/...e_of_the_union the speech could be 75 mins (not sure if that includes the applaudiance breaks or not)...

Biden is so distracting in the background with his head nodding and clapping too early.
