That does not seem tough to believe.

The mayor of my town has tons of executive experience. I don't think he'd make a particularly good president.

A very important tidbit we also aren't including is that Sarah Palin resigned as governor of Alaska without finishing one term. In and of itself that can be taken as a statement that she doesn't think herself to be qualified.

Obama quit during his first term as Senator.

Certainly much more than how the other senator from New York felt about Clinton winning an election.

I do. I am always amazed, however, that the Democrats still try to make comparisons of the Rep VP to the Dem V. It's a freaking VP. No one cares. No one changed their votes because of it.

Though it is hard not to recognize on any level that Obama is the least qualified that we have seen (I don't know much about the experience of way back presidents), so maybe that is why they keep up that fight.

I take weeks off from the Politics forum and the same arguments are being made.

I simply cannot see how one can defend Governor Palin as a serious player. I'll stop arguing the obvious because the opposing view seems to be made up of only adversarial positions.

I have never said she was a serious player. I don't believe that she is. But I never thought Obama or Hillary could be either. The "dislike" of Palin seems on par with the "dislike" of Hillary, so I think stranger things have happened. Experience no longer truly matters in picking a president, shown by Obama's election, so stranger things have happened. But I don't think she is a serious player.

Re: Is Sarah Palin going to be our next President?

McCain Campaign manager Steve Schmidt claimed, “She knew nothing.” She had to be taken through World War I, World War II, the Cold War, and Palin was not aware there was a difference between North and South Korea. She continued to insist that Iraq was behind 9/11; and when her son was being sent off to Iraq, she couldn’t describe who we were fighting. *
Defend away.

What don't you get? People disliked Hillary because she was seen as an opportunist bitch. People dislike (and distrust) Palin because she is a complete lightweight without even the basic knowledge most in this very forum possess.

And yes, people will pick a very smart, capable person even if they lack specific experience. It happens every single day.

And that's what this discussion is really about. CRM114 might not think she's qualified, but that's irrelevant since he wouldn't vote for her due to her ideology (which is absolutely fine, BTW). In fact, her ideology is likely a contributing factor to someone like CRM114 not thinking she's qualified.

I contend Palin's support comes from a very specific minority of the electorate, and that minority cannot and will not win her the White House. It might get her the GOP nomination, but I think even that's unlikely. And, working for Fox will probably only exacerbate the division of opinion about her.

I don't think anyone is comparing Palin's experience to Obama's and claiming a slam dunk... I think the argument is more her udder vapidity against what seems to be a thoughtful intellectual.

And there's the rub...THAT , which most clearly see as her greatest weakness is what the minority sees as her greatest strength.

She is not an intellectual concerned with big ideas and their ramifications. She's an anti-intellectual, in the NEW Republican party, where gut-feeling ideology and religious fundamentalism are making a stand against reason and science.

It has nothing to do with it.

You're letting your Obatonism show through. You better watch it.

Re: Is Sarah Palin going to be our next President?

Is being an intellect really that important as to what kind of president one makes?

I'll argue that Harry Truman was hardly an intellectual, but I think he made a pretty good president.

Eisenhower was certainly not an intellectual. Some argue that he made a pretty good president.
If the public had wanted an intellectual as the Republican standard bearer in 1952 they would have chosen another 5 star general.

I'll take common sense over intellectualism any day for a president.

All other things being equal, I'd rather have a smart president than a dumb one.

No one could possibly know because she totally rejects reason or intellectual rigor and wears it like a badge of honor. It is her entire shtick.

Ike and Truman did not do that.

BTW, did Ike or Truman refuse to do press interviews or lie pathologically?

The problem is, all things aren't equal. Jimmy Carter was considered smart. So is Obama. That didn't do/isn't doing the country much good.

Being what we think of as "smart" isn't necessarily what's needed to lead the country or even make the right decisions for it.
