Same Sex Marriage Part 3

Continued from here: http://forum.dvdtalk.com/politics-wo...-part-2-a.html

I thought this was funny:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091201/...ZlbWVudHVuZGU-

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Til death do us part? The vow would really hold true in California if a Sacramento Web designer gets his way.

In a movement that seems ripped from the pages of Comedy Channel writers, John Marcotte wants to put a measure on the ballot next year to ban divorce in California.

The effort is meant to be a satirical statement after California voters outlawed gay marriage in 2008, largely on the argument that a ban is needed to protect the sanctity of traditional marriage. If that's the case, then Marcotte reasons voters should have no problem banning divorce.

Odd thing is that this would probably be supported by a lot of the Yes on 8 folks (at least they'd say they support it)

It would be approved if it included a $10 billion bond measure and used the word "wetland".

You would if you gave up your hobby of collecting Klingon memorabilia.

Does anyone believe gay marriage will be legal in every state, in 30 years tops?

I don't.

When did the last state to legalize interracial marriage do so? IIRC it wasn't that long ago.

Yes, but only because it will be due to a Supreme Court ruling based on the equal protection clause.

Fine by me, we shouldn't leave this kind of stuff open to public vote anyway.

I don't think they will rule that way. I wouldn't mind it, but I don't think they will. I think they would have if the ERA had passed years ago.

I don't know what the ERA has to do with it. The ERA was completely redundant and unnecessary.

And you call yourself a lawyer

There is some discrimination of the sexes currently. Many local ordinances require more toilets in public restrooms for women, as an example. If you had an amendment passed that said there was absolutely no difference (and could be no difference) between the sexes, there would be no differences allowed. But their are. I think the ERA would have had an amazing number of unintended consequences, and not all of them bad, by any means.

If it means more urinals, I'm all for it.

Specifically more urinals in ladies' restrooms.

D.C. Council votes to legalize gay marriage

December 1, 2009 - 2:57pm
WASHINGTON - In the first of two votes on allowing same-sex marriage in the nation's capital, the D.C. City Council has passed the bill 11 to 2.

The D.C. Council voted for the first time Tuesday. The bill had been expected to pass, as 10 of the 13 council members co-sponsored its introduction. A second, final vote is expected in January, and D.C.'s mayor has promised to sign the bill.

Marriages would begin in the city as soon as the bill passes a period of Congressional review.

Massachusetts, Iowa, Vermont and Connecticut already allow same-sex marriage. New Hampshire will join them Jan. 1.

The two council members who voted against the bill were Marion Barry and Yvette Alexander.

I'm picturing Sean Hannity freezing up like a computer on Star Trek confronted with one of Kirk's logic paradoxes.

"Marriages would begin in the city as soon as the bill passes a period of Congressional review."

How odd. What is the point of that, and can they actually stop something, or is it just some weird DC thing?

Re: Same Sex Marriage Part 3

By the time it passes, it will also have a new healthcare initiative and several city construction projects added to it.

Unless things have changed when I wasn't looking, there's very little the DC government can do with Congress OKing it.

Either he meant "without" or he can cut out everything after "do."
