If you disagree with Obama - you are racist.

Unfortunately, as really to nobody's surprise, it seems like it has come down to this. If you dare to speak up against Obama's policies you will be labeled a racist. Since the debate over the health care bill started there have been charges of racism. It seems like we are not going to be able to have a reasonable disagreement with this president without it turning into a full blown race war.

This is just the latest example:

Black congresswoman says opposition trying to destroy president 'who looks like me'...
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/O6XwEiy60P0&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en&feature=player_embedded&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/O6XwEiy60P0&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en&feature=player_embedded&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Whether you agree with the health care bill or not isn't the issue here. I think the issue here is can you disagree with this president without being labeled a racist? What can or should be done to prevent us from going over the deep end here?

You could start by falling in line. I don't see why that's so difficult to understand.

Unfortunately, as to no one's surprise, we're going to get about one of these threads every week for at least the next four years.

Re: If you disagree with Obama - you are racist.

Obviously, she looks like this:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...rack_Obama.jpg

Clearly, there are many criticisms of President Obama that are not born from racism. Equally clearly, there are some who are. And there are some where it's not clear. Likewise, there are some who will falsely cry racism when it is obviously not intended. Some will reserve the label for when it clearly is warranted. And others will raise the question of racism when racism is plausibly inferred but arguably absent.

Can we take that as read and not start a thread every time someone here disagrees with an accusation of racism?

Can we use the same rule for anytime Rush says something stupid?

The tossing around of the term "Racism" by lefties seems to be somewhat less prevalent than the tossing around of the term "Socialist" by righties. Both are pretty stupid in my opinion and are just used to demonize the other side.

Works for me.

I'm fairly confident that Diane Watson doesn't speak for every Democrat in the U.S., just as I'm equally confident Rush Limbaugh doesn't speak for every Republican.

BTW, I had to chuckle when I looked up Watson's grundlepedia entry and saw that her religion is listed as "disputed". That probably explains a lot.

BTW, is it OK for me to refer to the Honorable Miss Watson as a "sexist" (and possibly a race-traitor) since she supported Hillary Clinton in the 2008 Democratic primaries?

:D

That's quite disturbing, since Hillary Clinton is married to a known racist. -eek-

Dammit. If I disagree with Obama, I'm a racist. If I disagreed with Bush, I'm a traitor. What's the solution?

We don't all think this. There is room for difference of opinion. The political placement test posted elsewhere prove should show that as of yet, I am the most liberal member of this board. I still manage to see the points made by others, and respond to them respectfully, for the most part. There is a racial component to some of the rhetoric on the right, but I do think that you are correct in your assertion that the response from the left has blown that a bit out of proportion. I think that the major problem is that the conservative movement is playing its greatest hits, the politics of fear, they've done it for the last 14 years, and it is only recently that it failed them (2006). So rather that re-framing their message, they seem to have chosen to amp it up to the point of cartoonish hysteria with the "Obama is going to destroy America" nonsense and the Nazi references. The problem is that not much of the voting public is smart enough to follow reasoned, logical arguments on either side. Who ever yells the loudest, gets the most attention, and is therefore viewed as the majority, whether that is correct or not. Race has very little to do with it.

You're right, being a socialist is MUCH worse than being a racist.

Doesn't help matters when we have Lynn Jenkin's looking for the 'Great White hope.'

If only the idiots on both sides would shut up and actually present and discuss issues.

Again, poor word choice because you know some hypersensitive person is going to scrutinize everything that comes out of a conservative’s mouth. Without knowing anything about the woman I assume she meant nothing racist by the comment. Its unfortunate we live in a society where people go out of there way to be offended.

Re: If you disagree with Obama - you are racist.

Regarding political correctness and the term "racist" being wielded as a weapon, I think Theodore Dalrymple's take is accurate:

"Political correctness is communist propaganda writ small. In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, nor to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is to co-operate with evil, and in some small way to become evil oneself. One's standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to."

Here's one example:

I leave the rest to you, but quite frankly, if you're not willing to concede that some people criticize President Obama simply because he's black, we probably don't have much to say to each other.

I think the title should have been "If you are racist.....then you probably disagree with Obama"
