It was a very stupid thing to say, though I agree that she was probably just clueless. The Great White Hope really has no other meaning, though, apart from a white person who can take down a person of color in a position of authority. Did she know that? Probably not.

I'd settle for the top 2% of whitey.

Diane Watson sounds about as racist as when Sonia Sotomayor was talking about a wise Latina woman.

Re: If you disagree with Obama - you are racist.

The tossing around of the term "Racism" by lefties seems to be somewhat less prevalent than the tossing around of the term "Socialist" by righties. Both are pretty stupid in my opinion and are just used to demonize the other side.
I disagree.

At what point do you get to say that government take over of business, health care and other aspects of our lives do you get to call it Socialism?

Should we just start calling it Fuckedupism? Whatever it is a piss poor form of governing.

Both terms are used to elevate the anger in the base of the respective party and scare the sheep who flip flop who they vote for every other election back to their side of the argument.

I'd say their about even, except that democratic constituents are less likely to parrot their representatives than republican ones.

The main issue is that the federal government isn't taking over anything. They are trying to augment several failing market based systems at once. Whether or not they are succeeding is certainly up for debate, however, it would take a blind person to imagine that the federal government has any interest in being the sole provider of health care, etc. in this country.

Yea well I wouldnt hire the captain of the titanic to sail my ship so I dont want the government "fixing", augmenting or whatever my health care.

The private sector has already proven they can make health care more efficient with Consumer Driven products. The government who does very little right needs to get the hell out of the way.

So a swastika is automatically racist? What does that say about all of the swastikas at the anti-Bush rallies?

Wouldn't using his presidential authority to "get whitey" be racist?

I'm not sure how this works save that no matter what critics of Obama say, they are racist and wrong.

There is a racial component to some of the rhetoric on the right, but I do think that you are correct in your assertion that the response from the left has blown that a bit out of proportion. I think that the major problem is that the conservative movement is playing its greatest hits, the politics of fear, they've done it for the last 14 years, and it is only recently that it failed them (2006). So rather that re-framing their message, they seem to have chosen to amp it up to the point of cartoonish hysteria with the "Obama is going to destroy America" nonsense and the Nazi references. The problem is that not much of the voting public is smart enough to follow reasoned, logical arguments on either side. Who ever yells the loudest, gets the most attention, and is therefore viewed as the majority, whether that is correct or not. Race has very little to do with it.

That's hardly a one sided affair either. I remember hearing how Republicans wanted to kill old people and starve kids, etc.

It seems obvious to me that once Republicans didn't actually kill old people that the Democrats decided to take measures into their own hands and intend on finishing the job with the health care legislation.

Haha. You don't think there's any interest in being the "sole provider" of anything? This socialism stuff is just a power grab, as it has been throughout history.

So if a person takes these people at their word, they are blind? Help me out here. Obama favors a single payer system, Barney Frank favors it. Ted Kennedy did. Others are on record supporting it, and yet you think people are blind if they believe the federal government has any interest in being the sole provider of health care in this country?

Seriously, who is being blind here? That is exactly what they say they want.

Here is the full video of the Barney Frank snippet in the above video. Again, how is it blind to think they want to take over and be the sole provider of health care in America? Clearly, they say they do.

You must not listen to very many people. I hear both sides echoing their party's talking points on CSPAN every morning. Frankly neither side holds the "high" ground any more.

The main issue is that the federal government isn't taking over anything.
Aside from the banks, the auto industry, etc... and now health care (see the links kvrdave provided). I think the first quote in my signature says it all.

There are differences between public services and socialism. If the public option was really meant to be an alternative that was designed to compete on a level playing ground would be one thing. Frankly though it seems to be designed to slowly under mind the private insurance industry forcing more and more people to "choose" the public plan until it effectively becomes the only health care available. I agree there needs to be reform in health care, I don't think jumping right to the public option is the best/first approach though.
