The Obama Presidential Approval Rating thread.

We always heard that Obama's approval ratings were silly since he's not even President yet. Well, now he is. HE IS PRESIDENT. What are your thoughts so far? I'm sure we will see numerous polls over the years. The biggest problem he has is an amazing approval rating going in... hard to keep that up since simply doing SOMETHING is bound to drive a good portion of people crazy.

I am optimistic and hopeful and a changemonger so if he keeps his approval this high, I will be satisfied as it will mean the country is likely doing well. I think he has the potential to retain a 50+ overall approval all the way through his first term, given what I have seen so far. Now that would be something of note.

It begins.

Re: The Obama Presidential Approval Rating thread.

Obama will start out in the 60s and inch down from there. At a certain point in his first term there will be an international incident and his approval will jump 10-15 points, and then it will inch down again. As long as his approval is above the mid-40s in October 2012 he will be re-elected.

As long as he has 100% of the 30%-ers and 50% of everybody else, he'll be ok.

We should do a weekly poll. Might be interesting to track the reaction of this forum.

If by interesting, you mean funny, then I agree.

It should be somewhere around 97% with only 3% hardcore Neo-Cons resisting the light and warmth of Obama.

If he didn't handle that international incident well, what do you think that would do to his approval rating?

What do you believe would hurt Obama's approval rating the most?

Re: The Obama Presidential Approval Rating thread.

I'm fairly certan he'll be a two term president unless he fucks up royally over he next four years.

Also, on a side note. Now that the election has offically drawn to a close and run its course how long does the political sub forum stay open?

Not living up to the unrealistic expectations people have for him. Once the "shine" wears off and people start to realize we are going to be in tough times for awhile it'll be interesting to see what happens.

The political forum is here to stay. It wasn't created for this election, so I don't see why it should go away now that it is over. There is always something political/newsworthy going on to discuss.

Historically it hasn't made a difference - it always goes up.

I give him a 97% approval rating so far. I subtract 3% for not bitch-slapping Roberts when he fucked him up on the oath.

Re: The Obama Presidential Approval Rating thread.

I don't about his approval rating, but I think he's going to be challenged in 6 months or so, and not just by the Republicans, but mainly factions within his own party.

Hey, even us Neocons are giving him some time.

I agree with wendersfan.

Bill Clinton could survive no matter how many scandals appeared. Obama can't.

Re: The Obama Presidential Approval Rating thread.

People knew that Clinton was somewhat of scoundrel. It didn't surprise them when he 'lived up' to their expectations.

Obama is not viewd by the public as a scoundrel - more like a goody two shoes.

That's how I feel. When people realize that he doesn't have a magic wand, can't walk on water, and he can't create a utopia for us all to live in.

I fear that too many voted for him because he's a great speaker, "we need change", it's trendy to be anti-Bush pro Obama, and quite honestly because he's black.

People have such high expectations that when he doesn't live up to them I think there could be quite the backlash, especially if his voter's lives are not any better off than before his term.

Re: The Obama Presidential Approval Rating thread.

Maybe if voters lives aren't actually as bad as they thought they were, simply looking at their existing lives in a new light will be enough for them to think Obama's doing just swell.

I don't know about that. I think Obama and his crew have done a good job tempering expectations. He has made it clear, even during today's speech, that America is going to be in a hard place for a while. And to a broader degree, I think the media has been saying as much for a while now. Obama has also consistently said that the problems we face are too big for government alone to address, and has asked the American people to... do something. I have to believe most Americans are realistic about what's going down in the world right now, and what Obama can reasonably do about it.

Based on what I've seen, this idea that large swaths of people think of Obama like the "Messiah" is a fabrication constructed by the right.

I would've thought so too until I saw all the election night reactions.

Do you think anyone actually heard anything in that speech? Certainly there are some people who did and have realistic expectations... I fear that's the minority though. Maybe I'm wrong, but there are some big challenges ahead for him and it's probably going to start within the Dem party as they try to "feel him out" and see what they can do. Remember one party rule has a lot to do w/ the situation we are currently in. I honestly don't see the Dems doing any better...

Re: The Obama Presidential Approval Rating thread.

I predict his approval rating will jump to 200%. That's right, everyone will approve, and it just won't be enough, so they will have to approve twice.

The economy will worsen and many Americans with only short-term memory will blame him......forgetting the country found the toilet long before he took office.
