Rev. Jeremiah Wright has an affair, and other fun tidbits

Since Obama has disowned him, I can no longer post this in the election thread any more than I can post pics of my grandmother or the black community.

Barack Obama’s former pastor has been cavorting with another man’s wife, whom he romanced while she worked at a church in Dallas run by one of his disciples, according to a report in the New York Post.

Elizabeth Payne, 37, told the Post that she and Rev. Jeremiah Wright, 67, had a sexual relationship this year and that she was fired from her job when the affair was made public. Payne had been working at Friendship-West Baptist Church as a secretary to the Rev. Frederick Haynes III, a longtime Wright protege.

“I was involved with Rev. Wright, and that’s why I lost my job and why my husband divorced me,” Payne was quoted saying in Tuesday’s newspaper. She said she has filed a wrongful-dismissal claim with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

According to Payne’s estranged husband, Fred Payne, 64, Wright e-mailed Elizabeth Payne and told her he was going to leave his wife, Ramah, for her.

Wright married Ramah more than 20 years ago after he unsuccessfully provided marriage counseling for her and her former husband. ( )

Fred Payne said members of the church, including Haynes, would not be pleased about the interracial aspect of the relationship.

People wouldn’t be happy to know that my wife was sleeping with a black man,” he said.

I know, it's from FoxNews, considered less reputable by some here than the Enquirer. But it's the best I could do on short notice.

This guy is a real piece of work. Guess we don't need to just focus on sound bites any more.

I would never vote for a man whose pastor cheated on his wife! Now, if that man cheated on his own wife, that's okay.

I believe it is quite possible to criticize Wright at this point without it reflecting upon Obama, especially considering the timing of this event and absolutely no reason to assume that Obama knew of it.

If Wright's televised rants were not enough, certainly this behavior deserves full condemnation by the community. A pastor has great responsibilities, and I can't imagine the feeling of such sin working in a man who has dedicated his life to preaching. Obviously he can be forgiven, but based on his public interviews this summer, I'm not sure whether he would ask for it or try to excuse his actions. I guess time will tell. Perhaps I should be less cynical, since I have obviously been shown a very skewed portrait of the man thus far.

Agreed. Obama sitting in an audience for 20 years and praising the sort of hate speech Wright spouted is one thing, but anything about Wright of which Obama had no direct knowledge is a completely different situation. It would also be a different situation if Wright's outbursts were a one-time thing, or if he left the congregation after they escalated (like Oprah).

It's the last line that gets me the most...
"People wouldn’t be happy to know that my wife was sleeping with a black man."

Disturbing on so many levels.

Wright married Ramah more than 20 years ago after he unsuccessfully provided marriage counseling for her and her former husband.

1) you have to wonder how hard he tried. "Uh, I can tell by looking at your wife that this will never work. We tried."
2) Apparently ministers don't have the same rules of not dating "clients" as actual counselors.
3) Good enough for King David, good enough for Rev. Wright. Powerful me just can't seem to keep from cheating.

See that's what type of Christain he is.
John Hagee, Joel Osteen or Billy Grahm would never do that.

Sorry, but while you MIGHT be technically correct, you are fundamentally wrong.

Can't we have a single thread in Politics Talk without dragging Palin into the discussion?

You'd be surprised how much pussy preachers get on the side.

Almost as much little boy ass as priests get.

Is this really the type of discussion you want to go with? I mean, you remember all the others that did, don't you?

Dave's right -- zipper problems know no political boundaries.

(Holy cow! I just looked up Jimmy Swaggart on wikipedia and he's 73.)
