Jazz singer switches National Anthem for 'black anthem' at political event

Denver, CO -- A jazz singer asked to sing the national anthem ended up singing what is commonly referred to as the National Black Anthem, 'Lift Every Voice and Sing.'

Rene Marie said it was an artistic form of expression. The city's mayor says it caught him off guard. He called it inappropriate for the ceremony.

Marie says she did it to share how she feels about life as a black woman in America. Watch the story by clicking the video link to your right.

Heard the clip of on the radio driving home. If what I heard was an accurate snippet, she was introduced on stage to sing 'the National Anthem', and she instead replaced it with her own choice of the 'black anthem', it was allowed to go on and met with a few seconds of silence and then a weak applause...........In other words, a collective shrug of the shoulders at best, a tacit approval at worst. Bunch of spineless wimps we've become. She should have been booed off stage, but not anymore. This country has no pride left any more. Pathetic. Her explanation was that she 'feels like a foreigner in her own country -being an African American and all', nevermind that she is a well to do Jazz musician, who was allowed to spew this shit instead of our national anthem at a political event. I'm so tired of this wussy culture we now have.

So some no-name musician performed an alternate anthem at some undefined event and a few people decided not to boo her. Oh the humanity - alert Bill O'Reilly!!!

It says Denver. Had it been in Boulder, it would have been a sing-a-long.

I've sang the original version of "Life Every Voice and Song" and it's actually a pretty good song.

But what Rene Marie did was ridiculous and she should be ashamed for doing this in the first place.

So, was she singing gratis? 'Cause I sure as hell wouldn't pay her for singing the wrong song. That's not the contract.

At a political event - anything goes. If she did this at Nascar it would not have been a pretty sight.

Yeah, you got me figured out. I guess I should care about this rather than important things.

The 'undefined event' was the state of the City of Denver event given by the Mayor annually. The apathy you display is exactly the point I'm trying to make, so thank you.

Again, we've got a wussified spineless culture, in 2008.

I feel so sorry for her, she has had a tough time as a black person in America.

She should be upset not that she's black but that her anthem sucks balls.

If we're all becoming music critics, the Star Spangled Banner is a pretty lousy tune too.

They need to bring in Carl Lewis for next year's event.

Sorry - couldn't find the version with the great Charlie Steiner laughing his ass off.

I propose this as the alternate "black anthem":

But this could signal the end of civilization as we know it!

Next thing you know, cats and dogs will get along, gays will be marrying each other, the National League will adopt the designated hitter, and the EARTH WILL OPEN UP AND SWALLOW THIS NATION WHOLE.

The National Anthem is so bad that I always feel envious when I hear other country's anthems at events.

So any excuse to hear something different is OK with me.

I actually like the Star Spangled Banner. Far superior to America the Beautiful or, ugh, God Bless America. However, I wouldn't be opposed to switch the National Anthem to James Brown's Living in America.
