The One and Only David Vitter Thread

We seem to have a thread for every political sex scandal except Senator Vitter's. I'd sure hate for him to feel left out, so here we go.

Vitter mum about inclusion on witness list
By Susan Crabtree
Posted: 04/07/08 04:21 PM [ET]
Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) isn’t saying much in response to the news that he may be forced to testify in the “D.C. Madam” case.

Lawyers for Deborah Jeane Palfrey have subpoenaed Vitter as a potential witness in the upcoming trial, according to media reports. Palfrey is pleading not guilty and argues that she was running a high-end “fantasy sex” escort service, not an illegal prostitution operation. Jury selection in the trial began Monday.

Although Palfrey’s lawyers would not reveal their strategy in court when the issue came up, they may be subpoenaing Vitter because they believe he will support their case and testify that he was calling Palfrey only for fantasy, not actual, sex.

His office did not return a request for comment about his inclusion on the witness list, and the Gonzales Weekly Citizen, a Louisiana publication, reported that a car carrying Vitter crashed into a No Parking sign at the Gonzales, La., Police Department parking lot Monday morning as the senator was trying to avoid a media scrum following a townhall meeting.

The car sped away from the scene, and no one appeared to be injured, the weekly reported.

at least Palfrey hasn't changed her story from the beginning. she always maintained it was legal and figured releasing the names would prove it or something.

were there no other big names on the list?

Should you really care whether there are other big names on the list?

Aren't there more important things for you to care about?

When Mr. Stabenew(?sp) was also recently caught with his pants down, it was interesting to see the stories on it because they brought up Vitter in pretty much every one of them and gave his political affiliation but they usually neglected to mention the word "democrat" in association with his senator wife.

There's somewhat of a difference between the 'actor' and the 'actor's wife,' wouldn't you agree?

Mr. Stabenow is not a U. S. Senator. Mr. Vitter is.

Don't know about the Vitter references, but...

Detroit Free Press:
Stabenow: Work is focus
Husband's action now a family issue

BY KORIE WILKINS and TODD SPANGLER • FREE PRESS STAFF WRITERS • April 3, 2008

Saying she's going through a "very difficult and personal time," U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow on Wednesday promised to focus on her job in Washington while dealing with revelations that her husband paid a prostitute $150 for sex in a Troy hotel.

Talking to the Free Press in Washington, Stabenow, a 57-year-old Democrat from Lansing who married radio talk-show executive Tom Athans in 2003, refused to discuss whether the two remain together or how she learned what he told Troy police detectives in late February.
ABC Nes:
A Gutsy Stabenow Speaks on the Senate Floor

April 02, 2008 3:37 PM

Her husband's admission to Michigan police that he paid a prostitute hit the headlines today, but an undeterred Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., took to the Senate floor this afternoon to advocate for a foreclosure relief bill.

"In Michigan these are not families that were flipping their houses or speculating on real estate," she said. "These are hard working families that have played by the rules their entire lives."

Stabenow added that "in Michigan we've been in recession for quite some time now. We are tough in Michigan, and resilient, and working hard to bring new opportunities and new industries."

Amen to the tough part, senator.

The Detroit Free Press reported today that Stabenow's husband Thomas Athans, also known for founding a liberal talk radio network, told cops in February that he paid $150 for sex.

You can read the police report, obtained by the Free Press through the Freedom of Information Act, HERE if you'd like to know more about Detective Mork, the Residence Inn near Big Beaver Road, and 20-year-old Alycia Lorraine Martin whose advertisement can be found HERE.

It's all pretty sad.

And Stabenow coming to the floor of the Senate is pretty gutsy.

ABC News' Z. Byron Wolf noted not only that Stabenow had the fortitude to come to speak on the Senate floor today, but that she was followed by Sen. David Vitter, R-La.
Washington Post:
Sen. Stabenow's Husband Nailed in Prostitution Bust

Bad day for Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.). Her husband,Thomas Athans, cofounder of a liberal talk radio network, is cooperating with police in an Internet-based prostitution bust at hotels in Troy, Mich., according to the Detroit Free Press.

According to the paper, Athans told police he "paid a prostitute $150 for sex at a Troy hotel in late February." The story notes that Athans, 46, was not arrested or charged.

Stabenow, 57, released a short statement today saying, "This is very disturbing and serious. Obviously it's a deeply difficult and personal matter."

While Google images shows that this photo of the couple appeared on Stabenow's Senate Web site, a check of the site this afternoon indicates that the couple's photo is no longer on display.
So yeah, that tired old contention is baseless, wouldn't you say?

He started a liberal talk radio network so I doubt he's a republican.

HA! that's a good one. The Today show has still not named Elliot Spitzer as a democrat.

I saw those same articles when this broke and the "D" was not there. It was added after they were "caught" by MRC.org and Newsbusters.
I am sure the next time there is a scandal, it will still be the same template.

From ABC: A Comprehensive History Lesson in 'Name That Party'
By Tom Blumer | March 11, 2008 - 10:00 ET

NewsBusters posters have already given Old Media deserved grief about its reluctance to pin the Democratic Party label on Eliot Spitzer, who, as of this moment, is still governor of New York (Brent Baker on evening news show coverage; Ken Shepherd on the BBC; Shepherd on the AP).

But, as blogger Ace noted last night (warning: some profanity at Ace's link), ABC has outdone the other outlets one better.

ABC's "Political Sex Scandals Redux" popup slideshow has a series of 13 slides relating to current and past politicians. If Republicans are or were involved, the network, with one rare and minor exception, consistently applies the "R" label almost immediately. With Democrats, with one very old exception, the party label isn't there.

Here are the specifics:

Slide 1, Eliot Spitzer -- No party ID on New York's current Democratic governor.
Slide 2, Mark Foley -- immediately labeled "R-Fla."
Slide 3, Randy "Duke" Cunningham -- immediately labeled "R-Calif."
Slide 4, David Vitter -- immediately labeled "R-La."
Slide 5, Randall Tobias (Deputy Secretary of State; April 2007) -- party affiliation not identified, and apparently not known.
Slide 6, Bill Clinton -- No Democratic party ID. The slide only mentions Monica Lewinsky. Others, who the BBC 10 years ago referred to as "All the President's Women," are nowhere to be found: Paula Jones, Gennifer Flowers, Kathleen Willey, and several others. Juanita Broaddrick (backup link)? Surely you jest.
Slide 7, Jim McGreevey -- No party ID on the former New Jersey Governor, who resigned in 2004.
Slide 8, Larry Craig -- immediately labeled "R-Idaho."
Slide 9, James E. West -- No party ID on Republican former Spokane, WA Mayor, 2005. Big whoop, as if a lower-level GOP overlook makes up for the other oversights identified here.
Slide 10, Bob Livingston -- GOP Party ID noted in the first sentence.
Slide 11, Daniel Crane -- immediately labeled "R-Ill."
Slide 12, Gerry E. Studds -- immediately labeled "D-Mass." The Studds scandal dates to 1983.
Slide 13, Wilbur Mills -- No party ID on the former Democratic House Speaker.
Summary:

Six Republicans immediately identified; one relatively obscure GOP member not ID'd.
Four Democratic affiliations not noted; one, involving a matter dating back a quarter-century, immediately identified.
One party affiliation not clear, and apparently not known.
Putting the party affiliation by the name of a politician isn't rocket science. It is very easy to do. No reason it shouldn't be done after the name of every pol.

Multiple people indicating that the word "democrat" doesn't appear in this story on the day that it broke:

http://www.wxyz.com/news/story.aspx?...5-a61fc917e935

Clicking it today reveals the word "democrat" appears in the 10th paragraph describing Stabenow's political affiliation.

This issue isn't such a big deal to me to show persecution or anything like that. I'm just pointing it out.

So what you're saying is that you have no proof that the three articles I posted have been changed.

I'm disappointed that the OP left out the political affiliation in the thread title.

I just showed indirect proof. Unless you are willing to believe that so many people who run the blogs all lied(that may be possible but these particular blogs are usually good. In fact, they are the same ones that found that Dan Rather's documents were forged) and that the AP had democrat in there. I find the alternate much more likely. The AP "forgot" to post her affiliation and then saw the blog discussion and added it.

I did also post a story that didn't list her affiliation.

Reading about some of the testimony, it sure didn't sound like a very profitable escort service. I guess Vitter likes them cheap.

I'll say one thing for Vitter - he's 'tackling' his problem in a far different way than Larry Craig is. Vitter appears on the floor of the Senate now more than ever. You hardly ever see Larry.

Banging female prostitutes is a tad different than what old Larry is suspected of, wouldn't you say. Plus we all know that a good number of Vitter's colleagues have the same 'problem.' They just haven't been caught.

It's been rumored that a number of the other senators have asked David for some telephone numbers - both men and women senators.
