DVDTalk may have 230 members on the FBI's Terrorist Watchlist

By July, the terrorist watchlist will have over 1 million names, making roughly 1 out of ever 300 people in the US a suspected terrorist.* The database grows by roughly 20,000 people per month.

This doesn't make sense to me at all. It certainly doesn't make me feel safer. I wonder how many of US here on the site are on some watchlist.

(More info at the ACLU site)

* Alright, so the watchlists aren't all just people residing in America, but don't fault me for using inflammatory estimates to make a statement!

1 million people on the terrorist watch list?

That's just an insane misuse of power, a catastrophic bungle. How are we supposed to know who really is and isn't a threat if we have to sort through a list of a million people???

I'm sure they are alphabetized and color coded.

Look, I know what you're all thinking, but I was NOT responsible for anyone here being put on that list.

They told me that since eXcentris wasn't a US citizen, and was posting from outside the US, it was out of their jurisdiction.

The govt messing up something they're doing? Say it isn't so!

Surprisingly, some of the same people critical of this want to put the govt in charge of other things like healthcare

Eventually, we'll ALL be on the watch list. Which kinda defeats the purpose of a watch list if you're watching everyone.

Well, with that many on the list, you know they're bound to catch one or two.

Just the law of averages.

With that many people on the terrorist list, we may not have enough water in the reservoirs to question them all.

I'm on it. I have a very common name and so my name is on the list. Essentially this means that I cannot check in for flights early online and I can't use the check-in kiosks at airports. I have to stand on line, show my driver's license to the clerk who then prints my boarding ticket. I've never missed a flight because of it because I've always had a thing about arriving early to airports, but it is a hassle. (I do find it strange that all I need to show is my driver's license because, as any 16 year old who wants to go drinking can tell you, they are pretty easy to fake.)

I have tried to get my name off the list. I filled out a form the Government has, had it notarized and sent it to Washington with an original copy of my birth certificate. It was supposed to take 90 days. It has been almost 3 years. When I looked into it, I was told that the organization is backlogged.

I have corresponded with a former US Ambassador with a name similar to mine that has the same problem. I figure if he doesn't have the connections to get off the list, my chances for getting off are not good.

I have no idea of what I'm "suspected" of and have no criminal record--not even a traffic ticket. I'm not exactly "in hiding" either. If the FBI wants to investigate any connections between me and terrorism, I'm pretty easy to find as my legal address is on my driver's license and in a number of different databases.

Ok, so who else is on the list?

Agreed. It's like having a "threat level" system with a series of colors...but we're always on high alert. That would be just as silly.
