9-11 conspiracy theories: how popular are they exactly?

I'm certain this has been discussed before here, but not for at least 18 months, judging by my search. It's back in the news now.

So, as everyone probably knows, a French website recently dug up a year old interview with Marion Cotillard (who recently won the Best Actress Oscar) in which she directly states that 9-11 was an inside job.

"So what" you say, a French actress is a conspiracy nut... not exactly news. So is Mos Def, Rosie O'Donnell etc. What did surprise me is the thousands of statements of support I've seen for her comments all over the web. As one small example, take the comments section from this article in the London Times:
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/new...cle3477645.ece

The vast majority of the comments there seem to believe in 9-11 conspiracy theories, trotting out hoary old, long (and easily) disproven chesnuts like the Air Force "stand down", Bin Laden's family being evacuated, WTC 7's "mysterious" collapse, missles hitting the Pentagon etc. The incredibly patronizing, sophomoric tone of the comments there about a frankly offensive topic are nothing less than outrageous but, judging by their frequency, seem to pass as well reasoned debate these days.

I shouldn't let my blood boil over stuff I read online, but after seeing thousands of these comments all over the place, I'm starting to feel a little under seige. Also, just the fact that no one even picked up on Cotillard's comments until now is indicative of the problem. Apparently, it's fairly common in Europe to believe in 9-11 conspiracies. Cotillard's own response seems to be mearly surprise that some people might take offense at her ideas. That's more than a little worrying.

My question: I always considered these views to be extremely fringe and obviously bonkers, but judging by the reaction to Cotillard faux pas, I'm starting to believe these are mainstream views.

How common do you think these ideas are?

PARIS, France (CNN) -- Throughout the spring, and into this summer, a leading bestseller in France has not been some great work of French literature but a $17-dollar paperback called the "Horrifying Fraud."

The book casts doubt on the official version of the events of September 11, substituting an elaborate conspiracy concocted by America's military-industrial complex in order to increase U.S. military budgets.

It has sold more than 200,000 copies here -- a huge success in French terms --attracting interest from readers like Eduard Chabanon and Naoufal Lahlou who are sceptical about much of what they are learn from the news.

Lahlou said: "There is always doubt. I haven't seen any proof that shows that man walked on the moon."

The human mind wants, more than anything, to create patterns and create meaning for things. Most of these conspiracy theories are laughably predictable. It's sad they hold so much currency, but we appear to have a global shortage of logic and critical thinking skills.

(And sorry to sound like a crumudgeon, but... That ignorance is being pandered to on TV more than ever before. It actively encourages poor critical thinking--consipracy theories can bring ratings, so truth be damned. American brain cells started being murdered by the media somewhere in the 70s, with the emergence of regular pseudo-science TV such as "In Search Of..." and its been getting worse ever since. There are millions of people who believe they've seen *proof* that there was no moon landing, *proof* that ghosts are real, etc, due to TV these days.)

Kyle: Yes, I'm saying one-fourth of Americans are retards.
Stan: Yeah, at least one-fourth.

OK, I'll make a fatal mistake and respond to this thread seriously.

The way I see it, there are different levels of belief concerning the Administration and the 9/11 attacks:

MIHOP: Made It Happen On Purpose - actually caused the 9/11 attacks
LIHOP: Let It Happen On Purpose - knew it was coming, and intentionally allowed it
NEGLIGENT: Saw the warning signs but failed to act - greatly responsible
INNOCENT MISTAKE: Saw the warning signs but misunderstood or reacted inappropriately - somewhat responsible
EXONERATED: Either never saw any warning signs, or recognized them and responded appropriately - not responsible

Now, in my opinion, the top level and the bottom level are crazy. I don't think that George Bush ordered a hit on the World Trade Center -- but I also don't see any way that they can be completely exonerated from blame, a la the 9/11 Report. I'd like to dismiss LIHOP out of hand, but there is too much yearning for "another Pearl Harbor" among neocon writers, and a bit too much evidence linking the Administration to the Saudis and bin Ladin, to easily do that. I also think that saying that the whole thing was an "innocent mistake" dismisses too much of the culpability, especially since there were plenty of people trying to get the Administration to do more about terrorism prior to the 9/11 attacks.

So that leaves me on the "Negligent" phase, teetering awfully close to "LIHOP". I keep hearing the Green Goblin line from Spiderman -- "so many good things, all happening to you" -- but I don't want to believe that any American could allow 3,000 innocent civilians to be sacrifced in the name of any political agenda.

That's my belief -- now flame on!

Why no mention of any previous administrations in your serious response? Bush was only in office about 20 months before the attacks of 9/11.

8 months (which bolsters your comment even further).
