If George Allen Doesn't Use a Racial Epithet, Is He the GOP Candidate?

I've been seeing Allen making the rounds locally lately in support of McCain. Two years ago, his star was shining bright, and there was talk of an eventual presidential bid. He even formed committees in some states. Then he said a racial epithet at a rally, lost his Senate seat and faded into obscurity.

With all the attacks on the candidates true conservativism, Allen was one guy who was DEFINITELY a conservative. He would have had the support of the conservative media and party hardliners.

It makes me wonder if he had just kept his mouth shut when being heckled if he may not be the candidate today. Any thoughts?

He's probably really kicking himself considering the current crop of bozos. But maybe we should consider ourselves lucky since it appears we dodged a bullet when we got to see how stupid he is.

If my memory serves correctly, he won the straw poll at CPAC in 2006 by a narrow margin over McCain.

I've repeatedly made this claim in this forum. Yes I believe he would be - he would have satisfied most of the segments of the GOP electorate.

And I can be thanked as being one of the people who help knock him out of the Senate and keep him from the Presidency.

Oh and BTW - he wasn't even being heckled. He went out of his way to make the remark.

If George Allen had won reelection in 2006... that would have made him a front-runner for the 2008 GOP nomination, right?

Then, no. No way he would have won.

No. The populous would still be stupid and McCain would still get the nomination.

Good article on this very topic in the Washington Post this week:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...020503237.html
("The 'What If' of Allen Haunts the GOP Race")

In general, the current situation suggests that there was room for lots of candidates in this race. Former Sen. Allen definitely could have been one of those, although who knows if even he would have been the "right candidate".

For future reference, you might want to make sure you know how to spell all the words in your post the next time you call other people stupid.

It's populace, not populous.

George Allen has way too large a head to become President. I believe he also has cauliflower ear.

But if he's a "true conservative", shouldn't the idea of standing next to McCain as his inferior fill him with dread and disgust?

George Allen is a major racist, so he would have wide appeal in the South.

Then again, maybe the country is tired of frat boy idiot candidates after 8 years of Bush.
