I think this woman (Dr. Wafa Sultan) rocks

Not sure who she is, but I like her views of religion and good behaviour

This woman rules!! Do you know where the interview originated? I hope she's still breathing. I like her first point about how women are treated...that's the one thing I find humorous about the whole debate over the Middle East. You'd think NOW would be all for liberation, but apparently not.

Awesome! Thanks for posting this.
I'm surprised that they let her go on Arabic TV.

Heathens, I mean atheists, tend to make a lot of sense.

Some of them do. The ones like Hitler don't.

Yes, this was incredible. My jaw was on the floor watching it.

She even made her opponent resort to the old "You're not even worth refuting" style "argument" that is a dead giveaway for the good whipping that he got, and the inability for him to argue with her on the merits of her points.

She was completely correct, and completely dead on in her analysis and bravery.

We definitely need more of this in the Arab world. This lady was an atheist - but it's a start. We also need Muslims saying the same things, because more people will listen to Muslims in that part of the world than atheists, which they will tend to tune out.

But this lady had to set some minds thinking over there, for sure.

Was your jaw on the floor because this was a Middle-Easterner saying this or because an Arab network allowed her to state her opinion on the air?

If the former, I don't understand why, but then again I suppose I am exposed to far more middle-easterners (who feel this way) than most people.

The latter. And the other thing was they let her keep talking without shouting her down like they do on CNN and FoxNews.

Frankly, I don't buy the Hitler = atheist argument but that's an argument for another thread. I don't think he was a Christian, but neither was he an atheist.

Besides, how do you explain his fascination with the occult in the Indiana Jones movies.

Is this in English? If not, how do we know the translation is accurate? Maybe it's a joke in the vein of Conan O'Brien changing the closed captions.

Can anyone verify?

That had to do with the whole Super Race concept and that was one of the reasons they loved Wagner's music esp. The Ring Operas. Hitler had less of an obsession with the occult than one or two of his henchmen and they were the ones who were looking for occult things.

Back on topic: That woman needs to go on our TV networks.

The broadcast had Aljazeera's symbol in the lower right corner, so it seems likely it was on Aljazeera. Precisely where the lady was is difficult to say since Aljazeera operates in several countries.

That was an editted interview, but it was clearly editted by like-minded people. Her opponent barely even got on screen! Obviously, she's not alone in her views. If you want to see a documentary mostly about Al Jazeera's coverage of the initial Iraq invasion check out "Control Room". Perhaps the film was just good propaganda, but the journalists in that film seemed a lot more honest, educated, and genuinely concerned about journalistic integrity and representing the actual events than anybody on Fox or CNN.

As for the content itself... I think the most commendable point she makes is about how anti-productive violence is. It's a comment that seems directly targetted at the embassy riots and violence surrounding those danish comics. She has a point. Muslims were angry about those comics because they portrayed Mohammed and Muslims as violent, so they go out and protest violently? She was talking sense there, but I think the reaction of her opponent will be a common one.

It may have been edited but the other people who are live on there aren't shouting her down while she's talking.

Well, yeah. If you're going to impugn an entire group of people, you need more than two examples.

Well, for starters, when the subtitles say 'democracy and dictatorship', she says words very similar. And I don't see why this would be a 'joke', there's nothing particularly funny about it.

Pol-pot.

And I am merely answering a sweeping generalization made by another member, not impugning someone out of the blue.
There isn't good evidence that Hitler was an atheist, though.

Which was exactly my point.

What was my sweeping? generalization. That most atheists make sense? How does throwing out a few names refute that? I didn't say all atheists make sense.

Saying most is a sweeping generalization?
Don't see the word "most" in your original post.

You'll see MEMRI captions on the video as well. Their entire schtick is translating Middle East news into English. Translations by them are credible from everything I've heard.
