Documentary: One Bright Shining Moment: The Forgotten Summer of George McGovern

Jeff Wells, a Hollywood columnist, has written an article about a documentary about the 1972 Democratic presidential candidate, George McGovern

Hollywood-Elsewhere

My favorite piece of the article:

But when asked last Saturday evening what he thinks about the present White House occupant, McGovern said he'd rather have Nixon there.

Yikes!

George McGovern...I have to say that he was slightly before my time, but I'm sure the c-man has some fond memories of that campaign.

Many have argued here that it was McGovern who was the first Dem candiate from the new liberal left wing of the party. It seems like he's a decent human being though.

George McGovern - probably (not probably) the worst candiate for president I've seen in my lifetime. However, I held my nose and voted for him. The pathetic thing is that the Democrats had an outstanding man who should have been the nominee of the party - Sen. Henry 'Scoop' Jackson.

It seems like he's a decent human being though.
Jimmy Carter was a decent human being.

Being a decent human being is not enough for a president.

The McGovern nomination was a direct result of the schism formed in the Democratic Party caused by the events of the 1968 Chicago convention. The left wing of the party wasn't able to take full control, but they did get the nomination process changed. Prior to 1968 the Democrats had won seven of the previous nine Presidential elections. Since 1968 they have won three of nine. McGovern was a nice man, a good Senator, but a horrible presidential candidate. But if the party hadn't been hell-bent on committing electoral suicide he would never have had the nomination to begin with. He would have been to 1972 what Eugene McCarthy was to 1968 - a candidate that all the idealistic college students could coalesce around, giving them the chance to tell campaign war stories to their kids and grandkids.

The party needs to get rid of the primary system - please!!

Unfortunately, we know that's not going to happen.

I'll never forget the 1972 Democratic National Convention. Not only was a piss-poor candidate nominated, but it was the worst run convention in history. What time did McGovern make his acceptance speech - 2:00 A.M.?

Since 1968 they have won three of nine.
As long as a majority of the Democratic primary voter is 'what he is,' I'm afraid that trend will continue.

Saying that he would get down on his knees to beg the North Vietnamese to return the POWs didn't help him much either.

I'll have the check this doc out. I've never been able to get through Fear and Loathing on the Campaign trail because of my ignorance of politics in the early 70's. Hopefully this will help me out.
