Democrats to hold convention in N.O. in 2008?

Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings suggested Wednesday that his fellow Democrats hold the party’s 2008 Presidential Convention in New Orleans as a sign of national support for New Orleans.

The decision ultimately rests on the shoulders of Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean and other party leaders, who will announce their selection sometime following the 2006 midterm elections.

If the move were to happen, it would be reminiscent of when Republicans held their 2004 party convention in New York City as a show of support three years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center killed more than 2,600 people.

I doubt that N.O. would be in good enough shape to hold the convention, even by 2008. Kind of an interesting suggestion but probably won't be one that'll be seriously considered.

I say we hold it in Solomalia. That will prove we care, while not actually doing anything.

Why not NYC?

That way Hillary won't have to travel far to accept the nomination.

The Democrats migh be wise to hold the convention in San Antonio, TX, because the future of the Democratic Party may very well lie in the Hispanic vote.

Maybe I'm stereotyping too much, but I thought Hispanics were a pretty religious bunch? If the Democrats stay the party of abortion through 2008 - I'll bet the Republicans give them a run for their money. (I'm talking about LEGAL Hispanics)

that was actually fun. I've never seen so many police snipers around. And it brought all the weirdos out demonstrating for their causes.

The Democrats are not the party of abortion. No one is pro-abortion.

Oh, you can find such people without much effort. Just browse the forums at the extreme feminist sites.

Yes, the destruction of a couple city blocks is the same as much of an entire city being underwater whose main large venue is kinda screwed up right now.

Yes, that's my point - it will take years (more than three) to make the city "presentable."

I haven't seen any serious talk about a $250 billion relief bill, that probably will come in the spring but I doubt it'll be that high.

Really? Answer a few questions then...

-When did Bloomberg submit his bid to the RNC to have NYC host the convention?

-When did the RNC select New York from a list of candidate sites?

Here's a hint. Both dates are well AFTER 9/11. Then again, you didn't specifically say 9/11/01...

It seems obvious to me that the Democrats are looking to capitalize on Katrina just as the Republicans sought to capitalize on 9/11. Both situations are/were "blatant political pandering" (to borry al_bundy's phrase) and both should make you angry.

Of course, NYC presented a plan that clearly showed they were up to the task. We don't know if New Orleans will be up to the task. Do we even know if New Orleans *wants* the Democratic convention in 2008? Then again, having it in New Orleans is merely a suggestion from one congressman, so it's premature to think New Orleans is even going to be a candidate.

A friend of mine says this is the biggest reason they chose NYC.

That's right. The GOP blew up the levies after all. And their Democratic mayor and governor did a fine job heading their respective relief efforts.
