RED CROSS: We Need More Money

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050923/...anes_donations

WASHINGTON - The American Red Cross asked Americans to give more to help hurricane victims, saying the $853 million donated for Katrina is less than half what's needed. Rita will require even more.

"We have a long way to go in our fundraising to meet the needs of people from Katrina, let alone what we need to do for the people of Rita," Senior Vice President of Preparedness and Response Joe Becker said Friday. "As fast as the money is coming in, we are spending it."

Becker said Katrina may cost the Red Cross more than $2 billion. He renewed a call for Americans to donate money and blood and to volunteer their time.

Already, $755 million of the Katrina donations have been spent or committed to relief efforts.

There are 158,000 Red Cross staff and volunteers mobilized for Katrina relief, with an additional 2,000 people sent in ahead of Rita. Nearly 70 shelters are up and running for Rita evacuees with another 54 on standby. More than 200 shelters are operational for Katrina victims.

The Red Cross said it has prepositioned supplies in anticipation of Rita, including setting up kitchens to serve meals.

Americans so far have donated more than $1 billion to help Katrina victims. The Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund announced earlier this week that the joint effort of the former presidents has produced more than $96 million in donations. The Salvation Army has collected more than $85 million.

But I thought caring corporations like Wal-Mart had already donated so much to them.

Because who needs the Red Cross any more with the amount the government will pour into this. Discuss.

I'm not giving my money to an overt Christian organization. Their symbol has a cross on it. Bible Thumpers I tell you!

Charity or government, but not both. At least for disaster relief, imo.

Here's an idea: Let's suspend elections for year 2006 and just keep things as they are for now and instead use the millions and millions of dollars that would otherwise be spent on campaign ads, etc and instead divert that money to helping with this disaster?

Damn. I really couldn't afford the donation I made last week and definitely can't afford to give more.

Nah, both are great together IMO. Everyone has to pay through their taxes, which is necessary as many people wouldn't donate even if they can afford to.

And charity gives those who want to contribute extra the opportunity to do so.

Citizens: "Yeah, I'm ok with that. Sounds good."

Politicians: "You Son Of A Bitch Whore's Ass. Screw that. Stupid idea! Who made you speaker for the people!"

As long as we're being silly, why not suspend our operations in Iraq, and save a save a whole bunch of money?

Yeah, pulling out of Iraq makes much more sense to me, and doesn't violate the term limits laws.

Here's an idea: let's have the elections in 2006 and just let Texas have its electoral districts redefined by the weather.

You do realize, that's a very good idea. I love it when you get silly.

Like Bush wouldn't find something else to spend that money on.

Yep.

When the government says "we're giving $200B" where is the incentive for individual donors?

I mean, $200 BILLION is, what, $400K per family displaced? Give it to them and be done with it. If they piss it away, their problem.

Government performing a charity function is idiotic. They are not our daddy.
