How do I go about exacting political change?

Clark County schools have a strict abstinence curriculum when it comes to sex. I want to change that and make them allow sex ed to be taught in schools (it is now not allowed).

Someone suggested starting a group. How does one even begin a task like that?

Thanks!

Walking up and down Las Vegas Blvd South is free. No need to institute any new programs on how to have sex in Vegas.

move to Political Talk... jk (although those guys might be able to help more)... I guess you would want to start by seeing who else in the community will support you.. contact local officials to see if any of them back you... you could post fliers in your area to try and have a group meeting

If they don't allow sex ed, they will definitely frown at group-sex ed

You might try talking to a school board member and going to a meeting and have something to say prepared.

You should start a group. After you lead the first meeting, and other people offer suggestions, never go again.

I see. You want to force your views on the rest of the people.

Clark County? You should be pushing for the schools to have sex ed field trips to the Bunny Ranch.

Go to a school board meeting with a speech prepared. Might be helpful to get a few like minded parents to go with you.

I hate the abstinence only approach. Many parents are uncomfortable talking with their kids about safe sex, and abstinence just really isn't a realistic expectation for most high school kids. So better to have at least some basic sex ed in health classes IMO.

Of course I do, because my views are right!

We're in Vegas. There's sex messages everywhere.

I'm all for permission slips from the parents and a trip to the library if the parent objects to the class, so it's not like they'd be forced. If we didn't have permission slips a determined parent would just say their kid was sick that day.

Write letters to the editor of your local paper.

Include pics of editor cheating on his wife.

I just had a IMHO brilliant idea. While I get abstinence-only thrown out, I'm going to develop my very own sex ed seminar, get the library's permission to use a conference room for it, advertise it, and have parents bring in their kids for the class (and the parents can stay if they want). I have a Masters in Public Health with a concentration in community health education so for the parents it's not like I'm a schmoe off the street. The flyer will say something like (What the schools don't want your kids to know about sex - how to have sexually mature and responsible children - a seminar in sex ed).

Only piece of good advice yet.

Getting the media involved might work in creating a community dialogue.

BTW getting approvoal from the librarian to use the conference room does not give you the right/authority to do any sort of teaching... usually you have to be certified by the state.

Any kind of intelligent administrator would intentionally keep you, and your free love ideas, as far away from the children as possible to protect their own ass.

Did someone earn political capital in the last election, spend some of it, and now you're trying to figure out how much to give back?

Are you sure that I can't go into a meeting and say whatever I want about safe sex, protected by the first amendment, if the parents bring their children and the library approves?
