WASHINGTON - Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) has told top aides he intends to resign from President Bush (news - web sites)'s Cabinet, high-ranking State Department officials said Monday.

Powell, who long has been rumored planning only a single term with Bush, told his aides that he intends to leave once Bush settles on whom to succeed him, said the officials, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The word of Powell's imminent departure kicked off a new week of Cabinet shuffling for Bush, who is planning his second term.

IF Cheney goes too, due to his health: will there be anybody left when mid-January comes around?

BREAKING NEWS
NBC News
Updated: 9:51 a.m. ET Nov. 15, 2004

WASHINGTON - Colin Powell has resigned as secretary of state, becoming the latest member of President Bush’s Cabinet to depart for his second term, sources told NBC News on Monday.

The sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Powell told his senior staff early Monday that that he had submitted his resignation on Friday. He plans to stay on until a successor is confirmed, they said.

Word of Powell’s impending departure came shortly after Pentagon officials said there was a "strong possibility" that the secretary of state will visit the West Bank next week and meet with the new Palestinian leadership.

In addition to Powell, Attorney General John Ashcroft, Commerce Secretary Don Evans and Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham have announced their resignations. Administration officials also told The Associated Press on Friday that Education Secretary Rod Paige intends to leave his Cabinet position.

I suppose you can look at this two ways:\

1. He's positioning himself for a run at the presidency in 2008. I doubt it.

2. The DOD prevailed.

Didn't he admit a while ago that he only wanted the job for one term?

It looks like a total house cleaning of cabinet secretaries - the Sec. of Energy & the Sec. of Agriculture also resigned.

So that's Justice, Energy, State, Agri., Edu so far right? What was the turn over from Clinton's first to second term?

One name that won't be nominated for Secretary of State - Mr. Powell's deputy, Armitage (sp?). He's gone, or soon will be gone.

Nope. He was last week reportedly investigating space and opportunities on K, and talking with members of his staff about going with him. Besides, I don't think he ever would have been considered.

The timing of this announcement, as welcomed as it is, is strange however, especially in light of the comments and plans made by Mr. Powell last week. I am thinking this is more the President's decision than it is Mr. Powell's.

Armitage committed an unpardonable sin. He told a congressional committee there were too many idealogs in the White House.

I think the State Department (Powell & Armitage) were on a collision course with the White House concerning the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

I was wondering when this was going to happen.

Is Condi the most likely replacement? It would be a step up on the political ladder for her.

Does this mean there won't be a Palestinian state?

Actually, now that Yasser's dead - there's probably still a chance.

NO!!

She's made it quite clear that she doesn't want the job.

She wants the job with the real power - Don Rumsfeld's job.

It probably means that Bush doesn't intend to skip the first two phases of the Road Map to Peace & proceed with the third phase. I believe Powell & Armitage agree with the British that the first two phases should be skipped.

Okay, I never heard that she didn't want it.

Ron Silver is not really busy - I'm sure he'd be happy to do it.

I just heard a talking head make the most ridiculous statement of the day. He said that Colin Powell could very well be a Bush nominee for the Supreme Court.
