Are college kids "Better informed" or "Naive"

With all the "Get out the Vote" programs aimed at first time voters, are people hoping kids will vote period, or do they figure that the college kids will swing towards the Democrats?

Most interviews, posts, etc., I have seen from college-aged people come across as not only Democrat, but very liberal (much more so than the average Democrat.) There was mention of the blue spots on the county election map either being big cities (a given) or college towns.

Do you feel that college-aged people as a group are more liberal, and if so, why?

Is it because they are better educated and have more well-formed opinions than society as a whole?

Is it because they *think* they know more than their parents, and are rebelling against the conservative or centrist leanings of their parents?

Are they exposed to extreme liberal viewpoints by teachers whom they respect, and peer pressure by other students?

I can't remember the exact Churchill quote, but it's something along the lines of: "If you're not liberal when you're 20, you don't have a heart. If you're not conservative when you're 40, you don't have a brain".

I'm a college student studying Political Science so I think I'm pretty informed, but everyone else here is naive. They think it's "cool" to be liberal and hate the government. Some kids on my campus had a "tent city" and camped out until the election with all their anti-Bush signs (no Pro-Kerry ones).

Yesterday was great.

Can I get an option that includes "naive" without the "liberal"? Most of the conservative college students I see are pretty naive too.

Naive and trying to be "cool."

They've never been out in the real world. Wait until they get a paycheck and see how much the government takes out of it. Utopia costs money.

I don't think they are liberal because they are naive, I think they are liberal because the majority of the educators are liberal.

Some portion of naivety comes with being that young and still relatively isolated and dependent. There certainly are naive college kids from all sides.
I think in general college kids are better informed, and naive--because the vast majority of them are exposed on campus to one vein of political thought, both entrenched in the university faculty and in/around campus. So they're naive in that many of them just naturally assume that what they hear the most of, is correct.
I don't think they're better politically educated, necessarily.
Probably a bit of it is rebellion, but not a lot. College campuses are ruled by a predominantly left/liberal cadre, and when this group of people with power are constantly around you, sometimes very vocally so, you absorb it and you have to really work at rejecting it or attempting to see it objectively.

Seriously most young kids I know on message boards and the like are liberal because it's the cool thing to do. Some of them think that people who want our President DEAD "have their heads on straight" . I think that a lot of them will look back on their lives in 20 years and be very ashamed of some of the things that they said/did.

Yeah, I don't see any reason to conflate "informed/not informed" with "liberal." These are completely separate questions.

Modifying poll title and third option to make this a legitimate poll.

college students tend to be lazy, apathetic, and liberal. that is why they don't vote and they don't matter in elections.

when they grow up they tend to turn conservative.

"College kids" is a pretty large group of people, but in the 18-22 area, it's a combination of being naive and idealistic. As for "informed", I'm sure there are plenty of informed college students, but being informed is one thing; being experienced is another. Your world view often changes when you have a job, a paycheck, a mortage, and kids.

Although I'm a conservative (more of a libertarian, actually), I'd definitely debate your premise that naive=liberal. I know many, many liberals. And while I strongly disagree with them, they are far from naive or uninformed.

That being said, most college kids are naive in the classic sense of the word, regardless of their political leanings. Just by definition, they haven't experienced enough of life to be anything but.

Why is the first poll answer option a question? Is everyone else better informed about this poll than I am? Who let the dogs out? What time is it? Are we there yet?

So they go from idealistic and naive to misguided?
