Christopher Reeve...because I'm the only one callous enough to ask.

First, let me say that I feel for the man, for his family, and I hope that his legacy (along with being the man of friggin steel ) will be a cure for spinal cord injuries.

The questions:

Will Superman's untimely demise give stem cell research a bit more traction as an election issue?

If so, to whom's advantage?

My answers, for the record: yes and Kerry

I think this elevates this as an issue...especially among women. It's clearly still well below the economy and terrorism, but I think it's probably approaching (and encroaching) the stallwart values issue...abortion.

Will it give stem cell research more traction: No. Stem cell research, even embryologic stem cell research isn't illegal. Ironic that M.J. Fox was lobbying the US govt. for it. Why doesn't he pester the Canadian govt. for more funds for Canadian research.

Timing worse: See answer to above. Not very many people care too much about this.

If Kerry rides CR's death with this, then I pity the DNC.

I was thinking the same thing when I read about his death this morning. I hope both groups let it go.

Don't think it matters. Neither will say that they don't want stem cell research. And both will spin that their way is the best. Net result...nothing.

I'm just waiting for the whacko right to start suggesting that Kerry had Reeve done in to further his campaign. It wouldn't surprise me in the least.

I know it's only a short matter of time before some fuckhead blames Bush, saying that his lack of support for stem cell research killed Reeve.

null

People on both sides of this issue have already made up there mind. However those that have not might be more likely to break for this issue. (Because the religious right mostly vote????) What do you think?

All questions regarding stem cells should be void during the last debate.

Not wanting to sound even more callous, but why should this make a lick of difference? It's one small issue living alongside of any number of far larger issues.

Sorry if I sound cynical, but I think the economy, the war, health and social issues far weigh more on people's minds than Christopher Reeve's death and the issue he pushed for. Heck, even the 2000 election 'steal' and Michael Moore's spin on it probably has more bearing than this.

Just my 2c, anyway.

Had to go with null. Despite the fact the Reeves was mentioned by Kerry in last Friday's debate, he won't have any serious impact on the election or the stem cell controversy.

I'm just saying. If the whacko right is willing to push the idea that Hillary had Vince Foster killed then they're willing to accuse Democrats of anything. Hell, even Rush was suggesting that if Kerry gets elected Hillary may have him killed.
