"The American President" vs. "Dave"

Which do you believe is the better film overall? They were released around the same time, and have similar plot points. There's scenes and elements in each I don't really care for, but on the whole, I really prefer Dave. Let's hear your votes, and why...

Re: "The American President" vs. "Dave"

I think both are terrible, but if I had to choose one I'd probably go with "Dave". Too much Rob Reiner proselytizing in TAP, and too much Ivan Reitman cutesie-poo shit in Dave make neither a winning proposition.

Re: "The American President" vs. "Dave"

The main reason I like Dave so much is because it shows a "President" who actually cares more about others than himself...and that's what this country desperately needs, in all places of power.

Doesn't this belong in the movie forum? I never saw The American President, but Dave had some good laughs in it.

Despite being based off George Stephanopoulos, I really liked Michael J. Fox's role of "Lewis Rothschild" in The American President. This is by far the best scene in the film.

They're both politically-themed films, so I figured this was better than the general section.

Well it won't get seen in this forum. But aside from that I never saw the American President and Dave is a terrible movie. Good idea, bad movie. Someone should take another stab at the concept of presidential impersonator takes over for the real thing.

Re: "The American President" vs. "Dave"

Well Dave I really liked because of the massive fraud perpetrated against the American people. It really shows that even the nicest and warmest of us can commit truly despicable acts. And the American people never found out! So now he can live out his life knowing he lied to millions and millions of innocent people. That's gotta feel pretty good.

The American President was good because of how the main character lived in sin with that harlot and this behavior was ultimately vindicated. All he had to do was go on national television and trash his opponent's traditional American values. And you just know he got re-elected after the credits rolled.

So it's a toss up for me.

Re: "The American President" vs. "Dave"

My main problem with The American President is the film's overall liberal slant, and the outright lie about the ACLU in Douglas' final speech. I know there's crooked folks like the fictional Rumson in the Republican Party, but most Democrat politicians are far from saintly.

The only problem I had with Dave was them actually showing Mitchell with his mistress. There had to be a more "classy" way to show how terrible a human being he was. Our current political system is so messed up; if real Presidents were anything like Dave Kovic, I'd be a much prouder and happier American citizen.

And what exactly was the lie?

Nice generalization about Democratic (not "Democrat") politicians, by the way.

Seems like Political Film should fall under Religion/Politics. And a certain Political Exile shouldn't be allowed to post here either.

Haven't seen either one. All I remember was thinking that Annette Benning was pretty sexy in that. It's when she was working out, so she had some nice definition in her arms, back, shoulders, etc...

Dave, though TAP kind of paved the way for West Wing.

In the film's final speech, Shepard says the ACLU's sole purpose is to defend the Bill of Rights. However, this was co-founder Roger Nash Baldwin's original stance...

"I am for socialism, disarmament, and, ultimately, for abolishing the state itself... I seek the social ownership of property, the abolition of the propertied class, and the sole control of those who produce wealth. Communism is the goal."

Baldwin later claimed he abandoned that worldview, but the ACLU certainly hasn't. They've fought like crazy against every major attempt to protect the Founders' original purposes and intents for this country, as defined with the Constitution and Declaration of Independence.

Holy Christ, we almost had a fucking film discussion, and you had to derail the train just as it left the station.

Relax, Hokey; someone asked me how the ACLU statement in one of the films was a lie, and I explained it. Nothing more to it than that.

Before you hit the reply button, you should ask yourself, WWRJD?

Here's an example of a recent case the ACLU has gotten involved in, regarding an alleged religious expression issue:

Not seeing how this makes them a horrible organization.

Re: "The American President" vs. "Dave"

Well, Max Cherry went to TAP in Jackie Brown and I like Max Cherry, so...

Around a year ago, I picked up a DVD 2-pack of these two movies. I didn't watch either for around six months, felt compelled to watch Dave first and then a month later, The American President. I haven't watched them since. Each has scenes that really stand out for me, such as the budget modification scene in Dave and the Michael J. Fox confrontation scene in TAP.

Which one is better? Probably whichever one I feel compelled to watch again first. I will update if and when this happens.

I've said it many times in the politics forum....the ACLU isn't a defender of the Bill of Rights as a whole (and their 'haters' don't either; there are very few of us who do defend it all), but I'm glad they exist to defend the 1st (and they defend free exercise as well as establishment) and the criminal procedure amendments.

I really like American President, but Dave was just a little better. Both movies serve a different type of purpose, though.
