What one thing did you hate most about 2021?

We started with a riot on the capitol 6 days after the year started. 6 days. People died. People got hurt. Democracy was literally under attack, brutally. A lot of good people died. A lot of good people got sick. Areas of the country were dry, on fire. 2021 just sucked as a whole.

Air your grievances.

What one thing did you hate most about 2021?

For me: Covid. The way we look at things, people, touching stuff, wearing masks. It’s a world we’ve never known and I’m sure many never dreamed of ever knowing ever. And we’re not even making headroom. Sure we got vaccines and boosters and pills to combat, but even boosted are getting infected. They’re not dying to my knowledge, but is it just a matter of time? It’s gotten worse than earlier and last year. Relaxing standards my ass. This thing is a beast. A big, nasty beast that has taken so much from so many. It blows.

4 people in my life died. Two personal, one work, and one that was some of both. That last one really hurt. She was the only person I was looking forward to seeing again in the office.

And speaking of work, it continues to piss me off such that Iím thinking of finishing my degree and finding someplace else after 24 years of being with the same organization.

Easily covid is the worst, but I really fucking hate the tax law change that was snuck into the stimulus bill back in March. The change is if you receive $600 or more in online payments in a year, the IRS gets notified and you get a 1099. Lowering the threshold from $20000 down to $600 sweeps up people who don't legitimately owe taxes, but they still have to report it now.. For me, I can't sell my personal items at a loss on Ebay anymore unless I want to hire a tax accountant or try to figure out confusing tax forms myself. Not to mention most people don't have proof of original cost for all their personal items. Great way to kick people down even more who need some extra income.

I will never sell on Ebay again cuz of this shitty law.

Lost both of my cats this year. I thought having two would make losing one easier, but when one died the other wasn't in great shape and only lasted 5 months more. Getting my place in order before bringing in two new kitties. Normally would have gotten them after losing the first one, but the other cat likely wouldn't have liked that given his poor health.

Other stuff that sucked- Fry's formally going out of business after being a walking corpse for about a year and a half- that was the last store around here that was truly fun to go to. Every new release Blu-Ray I bought this year was via mail order since they weren't mainstream enough for Target or Best Buy. I got a great job this summer with public transit where I was well liked but got axed after a permanent employee wanted the position and they had to let him have it due to the way the place is organized. Still in the same apartment after 19 years now, will be 20 if I don't move before September. One of my favorite restaurants serving unique Korean food, located within walking distance, closed this year and was replaced with a Mexican place that's OK but no different from the several others we already have. Ebay banned porn, making vintage porn on Beta and laserdisc much harder to find. Amoeba Music Hollywood was forced out of their old location and re-opened in a smaller space that isn't worth the 6-hour drive anymore. Movie theaters re-opened but continued to suck.

Covid.

Fucking Covid ruined everything. Ruined the way we eat, drink, entertain, socialize, the way we interact with one another, even the way we think about living. Covid ruined everything. What a boring, paranoid fucking life it's become.

My best friend got diagnosed with HPV throat cancer and he's currently going through hell and I can't even talk to him any more because his mouth sores from Radiation therapy are so bad he can't talk.
I didn't think anything could be a bigger gut punch than Covid-19 but this one is hitting me hard.
And just like with Covid, I deal with parents every day who refuse a vaccine that could prevent their children from getting this.

Horrible. :( My condolences to your best friend. :( Truly sad to read that.

COVID. COVID. COVID.

And the damage it has caused the Nation, and the stupidity and entitlement it has caused. Also the strife and distancing of people it has effected (= brought out the absolute worse in people's latent personalities).

Thank you. I appreciate that. The good news is that it has over a 90% survival rate (non-HPV throat cancer is only about 50%) so I am pretty sure this is the worst of it. Lots of people get way worse diagnoses.

That's rough... I can't imagine going through such a predicament -- especially if it was my best friend. I do hope things improve for you, for him, and all of us for 2022.

I knew three people who died from COVID. My best friend and dive buddy let me know he is an anti-vaxxer. He believes the conspiracy websites that say hundreds of thousands have died from the vaccines. I stopped diving with him.

I'm pretty sure 1099s were required for anybody receiving over $600 from a single source for many years now. I know I've had to file them. Maybe the change was for online like ebay rather than just professional.

Waking up every day fills me anew with despondency, but that's not unique to 2021. Covid means nothing to me, but I sympathize with everyone whose life has been made more difficult and less enjoyable by its ubiquity and social strictures.

Seriously, this shit would be winding down, if not completely gone by now, if it werenít for them.

3 colleagues of mine died this year of cancer. One of them I knew and worked with for most of my 9 years at the NFL and he died of Colon cancer at only 38. He had been battling it for 5 years and it just kept coming back and every time worse than before. He died about a month ago.

and of course COVID. With vaccines, I've been able to see family and friends again in person. But, I know it's disrupted the lives of so many people and has caused all kinds of psychological damage to people. People have developed all kinds of paranoias and anxieties and are unable to resume and enjoy the things they once loved doing. I feel for those people who are terrified to do anything other than work.

and lastly people who complain about masks, vaccines and make up all kinds of stupid bullshit saying it's violating their rights or it's socialism or Naziism. Fuck those idiots. They are mostly the reason why we're heading into another year of this bullshit,

Covid is bad. But I'm still going to have to go with January 6th. I've been aware for my whole adult life that another pandemic was coming, and possibly within my lifetime.

I was not expecting a widely-supported fascist putsch in my lifetime.

Yea it was for online payment processors like paypal. Before, the IRS was not notified unless you sold $20K and had 200 transactions. Now if you sell as little as $50 a month, they get notified. This is going to be a big mess for many Ebay small sellers who use the platform as a virtual garage sale vs running a business. IF you own Ebay stock, I would sell it now. I bet they raise their fees big time to compensate for the cost of having to now send thousands and thousands of 1099s out which ends up hurting everyone..

Re: What one thing did you hate most about 2021?

Lost my 95 y/o father in June after caring for him in my home for 10 months, but grateful he did not live to see the country he lived in for 95 years and served in WWII devolve any further than it did. We watched the January 6 riots together and he was in tears. He was a Republican for decades and couldn't believe what he was seeing even though Reagan drove him out of that party, not Trump.

Because I had been caring for my father, losing my 85 y/o uncle, who was also one of my very best friends, in September 2020 kind of got swept under with all my caregiving responsibilities. I didn't have time to mourn until both of them were gone, and this summer and fall have been difficult. But in both their cases I'm glad they are out of suffering, and that they haven't had to see things get as bad as they are now.

Yeah.. it doesn't affect me directly since I stopped selling on Ebay in 2011, but man, if you thought Ebay was a shitshow now, things are about to get a HELL of a lot worse in 2022 and beyond. I've permanently marked them off my list now, for everyone's going to scrambling seven ways to Sunday to "make up" the loss in revenue that they'll now need to pay Uncle Sam. Who's going to pay that 25 to 32% markup?!! You can sure bet sellers aren't going to absorb it! Ebay will raise fees drastically and sellers will attempt to bamboozle buyers with markups of 25% and higher (ie, their tax brackets and marginal income tax % of the Ebay income they'll need to throw away to IRS).

Yes, that "law" is one of my most hated things of 2021, along with rampant inflation, outrageous cost of living increases, and supply issues. But, it all goes back to being a direct result COVID and the government printing way too much "free" money. We all knew this would happen, but sure, we accepted that free money anyway. (I didn't get a damn dime of "free" money, BTW, and that pissed me off as well, especially after having paid record high taxes).

2021 tried to kill me with congestive heart failure. I spent last NYE in the hospital awaiting my quadruple bypass surgery that eventually happened Jan 6th. I'm popping my small bottle of Martini & Rossi I was supposed to pop a year ago. Saved it a fucking year.
