You haven't experienced terryifying until you've seen a *scorpion* crawling on your bed while you were in it! Yes, in Calif. (Orange county). Just the one, thankfully never again. Centipedes have been in Calif. for 40 - 50 years. I encounted a single specimen crawling in my bathtub, about three years ago. Quickly squashed, and I was rather too astonished to be even remotely terrified. It and the scorpion both moved slowly enough that I was able to save the day in time -- SQUASH -- before anything serious happened! Oddly, and thankfully, I've never seen a single roach, mouse. or rat in the 34 years that I've owned my home. A few black widows, a couple brown recluse spiders (SQUASHED!), though.

In Arizona I had one of those suckers crawl in with me when I was in bed. It takes a lot of hits with flip flops to get one of them to fall apart. And you always check for them before you get in bed afterward.

Just one of the reasons why I sleep with ear plugs in - besides to cancel out noise!

Re: A roach just tried to climb into my ear!!!

Two years ago in Cuba, my niece and her mom were sharing a room with two beds. In the middle of the night, my niece woke up with a centipede crawling across her face. She spent the rest of the trip sharing the other bed with her mom. I asked my sis-in-law, if your daughter no longer wants to sleep in that bed, why don't you simply switch beds with her??? Her reply: "Are you mad!!! No way I'm sleeping in that bed either, we've condemned it!" I was going to point out that the beds are right next to each other and it didn't make much sense to condemn one and not the other but I didn't bother.

Are you sure it wasn't already in your ear and you caught it crawling out?

I don't think I've ever seen a cockroach here in Canada. Maybe they are mostly found in cities?

We've always had house centipedes here. They are kind of freaky looking but completely harmless and in my experience have mostly confined themselves to the basement.

Ah yes, The Nest. I forgot about that one. Neither is a masterwork of horror, but The Nest has the edge on Bug, which isn't bad either.

I've lived in a large city my entire life, and the only places I have seen roaches were in motel rooms in the States. Doubtless they exist here, but I wouldn't know it.

Yes, the disgusting things that crawl up out of the sewer. One mushes them and their legs keep squirming. They're harmless, but give me the willies.

What the fuck, Deb? We have had this conversation too many times. Enough with the whole astral-stalking. It's creepy ... and you always appear fully dressed. It's creepy and disappointing.

I'll take sentences that automatically ruin Thanksgiving dinner for $600.

In the mood for a little torture, I came across this

Centipedes harmless? No, don't think so. This video can't be unseen. Normally I don't think Youtubers deserve much, and it's a "lazy" contrived way to make a living, but this guy deserves every penny he makes.

my old house had a lot of centipedes in the basement, occasionally they would make it to the first floor. Those things can move fast! I'm not squeamish but I did not enjoy seeing them run like hell...

One bug I get are crickets. Don't know how they get in. Usually around September start seeing a few here or there. Cat goes crazy over them, trying to catch one. They really don't bother me unless they start chirping. Loud as hell when it's inside.

Re: A roach just tried to climb into my ear!!!

Interesting timing of this thread. Yesterday I was awake all night and didn't lay down until around 5am. Minutes afterwards I felt a fluttering in my ear and knew immediately that something was in there. But I really didn't want to go to the ER considering the cost and was hoping it would just crawl its way out. That did not happen and so I anxiously awaited until the earliest urgent care center opened at 8am. Drove there and was surprised to see there was already a huge line of cars full of people needing to see a doctor. So I checked in at the front desk and was told my appointment would be closer to noon.

The nurse said she had never seen anyone come in with an insect in the ear before and was kind of puzzled by what to do. So she just shined a light in there and basically was startled to see something crawling inside. So then I waited probably 15 minutes for the doctor to arrive and he did the same thing - looked inside my ear with an otoscope and also saw something crawling inside. But the insect just retreated further and further into my ear. The doctor attempted several times to tweeze it out and finally got it out after like the 4th or 5th try. It was a German cockroach and was still alive.

So now I'm still kind of nervous that it may lead to an infection or hearing loss. During the visit he said the ear didn't look particularly red/swollen, but I'm still a bit paranoid about it.

'A cockroach moving in my head': Insect removed from man's ear after three days

(CNN)When 40-year-old Zane Wedding went swimming last week, he left with more than he bargained for -- a cockroach, which burrowed inside his left ear and stayed there for three days.

Wedding, who is Māori and works for Greenpeace, had taken a dip at his local pool in Auckland, New Zealand, on Friday, when, unbeknownst to him, the creature had crept inside his ear.
By the time he got home, he had the sensation that his ear was blocked.
"I used some drops to clear it up and fell asleep on the couch later that night," he told CNN Thursday.
"When I woke up in the morning and it was still blocked I went straight to the doctor. I was waiting for the doctor [surgery] to open up, it was that infuriating," he said.

Initially, the doctor thought he might have been experiencing blocked water, so advised him to go home and use a hairdryer to dry it out.
But Wedding knew something didn't feel right.
"I left the doctor with no relief at all. I spent most of the weekend laying on my side or jamming a hairdryer in my ear. When I had to walk around I would instantly be dizzy. When I would lay down, I could hear the water moving around my ear drum," he said.
"Over the weekend I tried anything I could for relief -- ear candles, jumping on one leg, chewing gum, I went for a run -- just anything I could think of [to] get the ear to clear."

'A cockroach moving in my head'

On Sunday night the wriggling suddenly stopped but the ear was still blocked, so Wedding booked in to see an ear, nose and throat specialist on Monday.
As soon as the doctor looked inside his ear, according to Wedding, she said: "Oh my god, I think you have an insect in your ear."

"In that moment I realized every movement I'd felt over the weekend was the cockroach moving around in my ear. I instantly thought of the fact I had just been pumping hot air into my head and cooking a cockroach in my ear canal all weekend. It made me feel sick," he said.
The doctor extracted the dead cockroach in a procedure that took less than five minutes.
"Every time she touched it I just imagined her squishing a cockroach into my eardrum, so I wasn't the perfect patient. It was instant relief... I felt a pop as soon as the doctor pulled it away," he said.
"Once I knew it was a bug it all clicked together... That's why the water would move even when I was still. It was a cockroach moving in my head."
