Glacier Bay, Alaska..

When folks ask me where's the most beautiful place I've been - I never hesitate to say Alaska. Seeing these glaciers up close is incredible. With the calving and cracking it's an incredible display.

Driving through Bangor, Maine .. had to snap a photo of Stephen King's house. A wrought Iron gate with spider webs and gargoyles .. it didn't disappoint.

Puntarenas, Costa Rica. These beautiful parrots are everywhere and the ones I encountered, like this one, didn't mind you sitting right next to them.

Alaska is my favorite cruise destination. I've done 3 itineraries to Alaska and it still amazes me each time.

Do you also have a picture of a Paris sidewalk cafe with the Eiffel Tower in the background?

Pompeii. Truly amazing the work that was done here to salvage these artifacts.

Mount Vesuvius is still active and could erupt again at any time.

Speaking of Vesuvius, I went up there in 2019. Not much fumes coming out at that time.

October 2019. The very end of the tourist season. I was with a group based in Agropoli. Our hotel closed
the day after we left.

Ah the weather must have been so much nicer then. When I was there it was very hot. Wish I'd gotten up to the volcano though. I'll be back!

Re: The travel photos thread

Vatican City (in the middle of Rome). The Pope about to give Sunday Mass. He made a speech I believe was in Italian. He appeared in the window on the top right of the building. This photo was right before he started talking.. Pickpockets are apparently a big fan of his as we were warned they would be swarming around.

Meanwhile these two Hot Dog on a Stick employees were taking a break. Oh I was just reminded that these are actually the Swiss Guard. They safeguard the Vatican and protect the Pope.

Weather was nice but time was short. It was late afternoon after Pompei and only a few of us wanted to go up, so the guide gave us 45 min to go up and come back down. The bus drops you 300 meters from the top, the path is all dirt and rocks and it's pretty steep. I was gassed when I got up there, took a few pics and rushed back down with 5 min to spare.

This is from my trip to Shenzhen, China in 2017. This is a miniature version of the Terra Cotta soldiers, which are located in X'ian, China.

I do hope to be able to see the real version one day.

Cape Horn, South America. It was a pretty nice day until we approach the cape but it never really got very bad. This is looking North towards South America with Antarctica behind us.

Panama canal, Panama. When you don't want to go 3500 extra nautical miles and brave the bad weather going around Cape Horn there's the Panama canal. This whole day event going through various locks is quite a time saver. This is the northern entrance. Each lock can take several ships at a time depending on size and the ship we we on paid about $275k to go through them all. All payment must be in cash and must be made in advance.

Re: The travel photos thread

Is that $275k fee is correct? The Panama Canal raised its rates last year, but the largest ship only has to pay $10k. They're raising the fees due to lack of rainfall. Global warming sucks.
