I thought the free slurpee day was always the 11th?

When I was a kid, 7-Eleven sold Icees, not Slurpees. I have always preferred the former.

^ When I was a kid in the 80s, Target used to sell Icees. It was always a special treat when my mom would buy me one.

Overall, I prefer Icees over Slurpees. I think they are smoother consistency and the flavor isnít as strong. The syrup in Slurpees is so sweet, I usually canít even finish a whole one.

Of course, itís probably been 10-15 years since Iíve had either so who knows how theyíve changed over the years.

I rarely get one any more but appreciate that 7-11 usually offers one sugar-free flavor, though I admit it usually isnít the best flavor.

Re: The Slurpee Icee Slushie Frozen drink thread

It was late at night and I was not thinking straight

I prefer the frozen cokes at Burger King over the Coke Slurpees

The Coke Slurpees taste weird and kind of like piss and most of the time there is more ice than syrup with Slurpees

Re: The Slurpee Icee Slushie Frozen drink thread

7-Eleven cancels Free Slurpee Day for 2020 due to COVID-19 outbreak. But you can still get a free Slurpee.

July 11 will be a little different this year since 7 Eleven will not offer Free Slurpee Day.

What’s going on:

  • 7-Eleven announced Tuesday that its Free Slurpee Day — where customers receive a free Slurpee drink on July 11 (you know, 7/11) — will be canceled this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
  • 7‑Eleven Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Marissa Jarratt: At 7‑Eleven, our top priority is the safety of customers, franchisees and employees. Gathering nine million of our closest friends in stores on one day just didn’t feel right, but I am heartened that we now have the opportunity to help the communities and neighborhoods that have been the lifeline of our business since 1927.”
  • 7-Eleven will still deliver free Slurpees — just not on one day for everybody.
How to get a free Slurpee
  • On July 1, anyone who has downloaded the 7Rewards app will receive a free medium Slurpee coupon on their personal account.
  • Customers can redeem the free Slurpee on any day in July. This allows customers “the opportunity to treat themselves when it’s convenient for them, while helping us practice physical distancing in stores,” according to 7-Eleven.

They switched to Slurpees sometime in the mid-1970s. Another chain called QuikTrip (I think they're out of Oklahoma) eventually beat 7-Eleven out of most of the Kansas City market, and in the 60s and 70s their variation was called a Koolee. It only came in cola or cherry. I liked Icees better but the closest 7-Eleven wasn't within after school walking distance. QuikTrip was. QuikTrip still sells some kind of slushy drink now but it's not a Slurpee or a Koolee these days, don't know what they call them. EDITED TO ADD that I just checked their website and they call theirs Freezonis.

I don't like Slurpees for the same reason you mentioned: they're way too sweet. I feel the same way about artificially sweetened drinks. I would rather have an occasional Pepsi with real sugar than a diet soda any day. The artificial sweetener tastes way sweeter than sugar. I work with women who swill Diet Coke every day. That shit's nasty.

When I was a kid, a truck would come around selling candy, ice cream, etc and I would always get a large bluberry icee from them. Boy was that delicious!

I miss those days

I always collected all the Slurpee cups during their summer promotions. Loved it when they included small holographic coins on the bottom of the cup.

Before COVID, the Target near my house sold Icees but they only had Cherry and Blue flavors. My favorite is Coke, which I usually get at Sheetz, but because of Covid, the machines have been turned off.

One of things I miss about 7/11 Slurpees was the superhero cups they used to give away with purchase

When I was a kid, Mom would buy us Icees whenever we made a trip to Kmart. I never did try a Slurpee until I was older, and didn't care for them much.
However,

There was a place we used to visit in the summers that had a gas station within walking distance of our accommodations and they had a Slush Puppie machine. We kids would go there every day for that sweet, slushy goodness. So great on a hot day.

As a kid I was terrible at baseball, but still kept getting signed up for Little League by my parents.

The only thing that kept me sane was the promise of one of these afterwards:

Agreed. Also I'm all about Strawberry and Coke flavors (I hate Cherry and the more... radical ones) and I remember going to Target a few months back (before all of this) and being surprised they had Coke again. But it was only one Target. But hey, free refills right? Wait, what?

My understanding is that 7-11 still lets you get your own Slurpee, which... doesn't seem like the greatest idea ever, but I haven't been since all this happened.

Yeah, my wife was craving one yesterday so I ran in and got one. You still pour your own. The cashier is behind the plexiglass shield.

We're okay with running into stores like this and getting drive-through and take-out food, but we refuse to sit down at a restaurant, even outdoors.

Re: The Slurpee Icee Slushie Frozen drink thread

I've never lived somewhere with 7/11 stations so I've never had an official Slurpee.

I think I've had an ICEE a couple times as a kid, and I distinctly remember having several of them at ValleyFair (our local version of Six Flags) but I don't know that I've had one since.

I'm so much more into drinks like coffee or occasional pop that I'm used to passing by the frozen drink machines at a station. I do like a blended coffee or reasonable facsimile, though.
