Would you abandon Earth to go live on a better hospitable planet?

Water found in habitable super-Earth's atmosphere for first time

Orbiting around a relatively docile red dwarf star, the exoplanet is "the best candidate for habitability that we know right now.

Astronomers have finally uncovered water vapor in the atmosphere of a super-Earth exoplanet orbiting within the habitable zone of its star. The find means that liquid water could also exist on the rocky world's surface, potentially even forming a global ocean.

The discovery, made with NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, serves as the first detection of water vapor in the atmosphere of such a planet. And because the planet, dubbed K2-18 b, likely sports a temperature similar to Earth, the newfound water vapor makes the world one of the most promising candidates for follow-up studies with next-generation space telescopes.

"This is the only planet right now that we know outside the solar system that has the correct temperature to support water, it has an atmosphere, and it has water in it, making this planet the best candidate for habitability that we know right now," lead author Angelos Tsiaras, an astronomer at University College London, said in a press conference.

Maybe, but ask me again in 20 years when I really have to make a choice.

I would have done so when I was younger. I wanted to go live on the moon. Now that I'm in my late 50s, I don't want to move.

If travel was developed that teleported you there maybe.. no way would I want to spend that time just making the trip only to be old AF when I get there. Of course, I could just be creepy AF too like Chris Pratt and spring a hot chick to keep me company.

I'd go but I know it would only be a short time until the illegal aliens come and ruin it all.

zyzzle probably would since he hates people and hates California so much.

But, then again he probably would balk at the expense of moving to outer space since he hates spending money.

Re: Would you abandon Earth to go live on a better hospitable planet?

God no, especially not a planet which did not have oxygen in its atmosphere. That pretty much eliminates all known planets right there.

Never fear, the idiots of the human race, who are propagating at an ever increasing pace, will destroy starship Earth soon enough, with their greedy, wasteful, and polluting ways of cherishing the almighty dollar.

Now, if a natually hospitable planet is ever found, it'll only be populated by billionaires, as only those Beautiful People will be able to afford to go there, so great will the cost be.

After the last three years, I'd settle for a more hospitable country at this point.

Re: Would you abandon Earth to go live on a better hospitable planet?

In this scenario, how prepared are we to do this and how safe are we to do so?

I probably wouldn't be an early adopter because if we go with the movies, 99% of the first to do this sort of thing end up dying horrible deaths with no family, no hope, and no chance of help. But I wouldn't want to be one of the crowd, because in other movies, it's years and years after things have been established so everyone sees it as normal and there's no pioneering aspect anymore.

I think I'd like to go and I think I can contribute unique skills for this sort of mission. But if I had to leave my family, I absolutely could not do it. And if the risk of their deaths was 99%, no way. Life has enough risk to it already.

Oh. Unless I get to fly in the Millennium Falcon. So long, family! Okay, Chewie, PUNCH IT!

If my mom wasn’t still alive, I’d leave. The only other things that would keep me here would be my cat and whiskey and I’ll bring them along.

Only if you can guarantee that it's "better" and that the trip won't ruin my health.

Nah, people would be needed to start building and maintaining the infrastructure and they won't be the billionaires. The billionaires will be the ones financing it.

It's like Dubai. The billionaires live in the beautiful towers of Fhloston Paradise. The workers live in tents in the desert.

We’ll get to find out if Oldboy asks a million questions in real life.
I also hope Draven and Mike86 go along so I won’t be the only gloom and doom guy there.
