100 million impacted by Capital One data breach

Capital One said a hacker gained access to more than 100 million Capital One customer accounts and credit card applications earlier this year.
The compromised data includes 140,000 Social Security numbers, 1 million Canadian Social Insurance numbers and 80,000 bank account numbers, in addition to an undisclosed number of people's names, addresses, credit scores, credit limits, balances, and other information, according to the bank and the US Department of Justice.
Paige Thompson, 33, was arrested in connection with the breach, the Justice Department said Monday. The department alleges that Thompson "posted on the information sharing site GitHub about her theft of information from the servers storing Capital One data."
Thompson, who the DOJ indicated had worked previously as a tech company software engineer, was able to gain access by exploiting a misconfigured web application firewall, the DOJ said.

Capital One (COF) indicated it fixed the vulnerability and said it is "unlikely that the information was used for fraud or disseminated by this individual." However, the company is still investigating.
The breach affected around 100 million people in the United States and about 6 million people in Canada, according to Capital One.
However, "no credit card account numbers or log-in credentials were compromised and over 99% of Social Security numbers were not compromised," the company said.

Capital One said it will notify people affected by the breach and will make free credit monitoring and identity protection available.
It is not immediately clear if Thompson has an attorney representing her.

What’s in my wallet? Probably a $125 settlement check from Capital One.

Re: 100 million impacted by Capital One data breach

I've no accounts or business with Capital one, so I'm probably not affected. I've thrown away every unsolicited piece of junk mail that I've ever gotten from them, so I hope they don't have my SSN.

As I said, "Another, day, another data breach. What the fuck else is new?"

Certainly seems like cybersecurity will be the hottest (well-paid?) job from here to eternity.

See? This is why you always take cash instead of credit monitoring. There will always be another breach to get free monitoring.

I get Capital One junk mail multiple times a week. I've never signed up for them or even visited their website. I've heard that if you respond to them, even to say STOP, they just validate your details and keep going. Fuck all that.
I hope the company figuratively (not literally) burns to the ground.

This is surely the 'aging Otter' version of 'take the lump sum.'

I ended up in the caring hands of Capital One a few years ago after it merged with ING

It this point, it's safe to assume that everyone's data has been hacked long ago.

Re: 100 million impacted by Capital One data breach

Six million Canadian customers were also exposed; about 1 million people’s Social Insurance numbers were compromised.
Something tells me a lot more US customers have had their social security number affected. In Canada, that's a 6:1 ratio.

One thing is true with corporations....ALWAYS go full-retard conservative on knowing how many were affected in any incident...and change your numbers as time goes on due to public pressure/facts.

On a side note, Synchrony Bank is getting rather massive with their acquisitions of credit card companies and store cards.

Who is Paige Thompson, the Seattle woman accused of hacking Capital One?

A stupid (non-savvy, didn't cover the tracks), and proud hacker, who blabbed online and deserved to be caught!

Well shit, here I'm thinking I've never done business with Capital One and then you mention ING which I'm sure my name is still on with my ex wife.

Re: 100 million impacted by Capital One data breach

I just payed off my Capital One credit card. I do have another one that is open that I only use for online purchases. I guess I should be worried but nothing I can really do.

Re: 100 million impacted by Capital One data breach

I've had a Capital One card for years (close to 20?) and never had a problem. But between this and the other breech (which says I was affected ) I'm freezing my accounts. Or trying to. My attempts seem to show an auto loan from 2016 I have no knowledge of! So two of the three credit places won't let me freeze anything because they can't verify I'm me online. Gotta snail-mail crap to 'em.

And they've just walked back the $125 cash option since so many signed up this week for it. They are basically already telling people to expect very little if you signed up for the cash.

Has there been notice of Capital One paying out anything other than free credit monitoring?

Are you talking about the Equifax settlement? That's been covered and discussed in this thread:

Security experts are saying that practically everyone has had their data stolen at one point, considering all the hacks that have happened, and will continue to happen.

Thatís not a surprise. According to the settlement, they only set aside $31 million for the cash payout. If only 1% of victims make a claim they would get about $25. If everyone made a claim the postage to mail the checks would cost more than the money set aside.https://www.theverge.com/2019/7/31/2...ut-125-dollars

^^ That's the Equifax breach settlement, not the Capital One data breach.

Re: 100 million impacted by Capital One data breach

I have TWO Capital One credit cards (because they swallowed a bank that the original one was with a few years back). The way I figure, maybe with that fucking cretin in the White House running his jaws all day, America will be bombed into rubble by the countries he's pissing off long before my not-so-great credit can be hacked into. Either way, I win. Or something.
