What to do in Montreal?

I'm heading there this weekend from Friday through Monday, and while I have a few things planned, I would love any suggestions from the group here. I'm going with a group, and so far we have:

See the view from Mont-Royal
St. Ambroise Brewery
See the Rainbow Ball installation

Of course I have to try poutine somewhere as well.

Other than that we don't have specific things to see other than visiting Old Montreal and Saint Catherine Street. What are some must do suggestions that I would have no clue about? This was a very last minute plan.

The Botanical Gardens is excellent to visit. I've only been when I was in my early 20's so other than that, it was mostly all skin bars and LaBatt Blue...

Visit the Dieu du Ciel! brewpub. Delicious beer, indeed! Try the Aphrodisiaque. It's a chocolate and vanilla stout. I had it, on tap, when I was there, and it was incredible.

I actually visited the first link in order to get the items I have now. I'm glad to hear it's actually a good list. I'll look into the fireworks as well.

I have one brewery, let's see if I can convince the group to go for a second.

I think the group would be very interested in the Botanical Gardens. I'd love to get my girlfriend and the rest to hit up some skin bars, but sadly I don't think it's going to make it into the itinerary.

Why does every city have a botanical garden and why is it always rated so high? San Diego has a botanical garden and it sucks. I’m taking this 11 state road trip soon and googling top things to do in St. Louis, Nashville, Oklahoma City, etc. All of them have botanical garden in the top 5.

I can't speak for any of the others but check out these images. Even as a 20yo looking to get drunk, I was in awe when I went there.

This isn't a brewery tour, but just a place to have a good beer, if you fancy it.

Re: What to do in Montreal?

I live here and I went to the Botanical Gardens twice, both times with family/friends from out of town. And both time (probably 10-12 years apart), I was thoroughly impressed.

I've been meaning to go to Montreal (I've never been) around the timing of this event for years but something always comes up. I'm really hoping next year will be the one for me.

Check the schedule beforehand and get tickets to one of the Place des Arts Galas hosted by a comic/comedian you like.

Also the Jazz Festival (lots of free outdoor venues) is right before Just for Laughs so you could hit both if you time it right.

And it's about time you get your ass over here!

Eat some local food. Turn off all electronics. Relax.

Working on it. I'm ashamed to admit, although I've visited much of the US (maybe twenty states) and a half dozen other countries, within Canada I've never been outside Ontario and I really need to remedy that. Quebec is first on my list.

Re: What to do in Montreal?

The truth is that nearby Quebec City is much more interesting than Montreal. One of the oldest places in the New World.

Re: What to do in Montreal?

Quebec is much smaller and more "touristy". Whether that's more or less interesting will depend on what you're looking for.

Re: What to do in Montreal?

Quebec City is also over 2 1/2 hours away. Not exactly nearby, if you're staying in Montreal. You have to consider it's going to take at least 5 hours away from your day, in travel time.

It is also less English friendly, in my experience. It wasn't a big deal, but it was noticeable.

Re: What to do in Montreal?

This is the last year for the art installation of those rainbow colored balls, which is what got the trip started. We’re already driving 5-6 hours to Montreal. I’m sure we can find plenty to do without adding another 5 hour round trip.

For some reason the light show in the Basilica Cathedral also looked kinda cool.

Re: What to do in Montreal?

If we head to Montreal I'd probably want to go a bit further and visit Quebec City as well, while we're in that direction. I need to brush up on my le français!

Re: What to do in Montreal?

It's funny you mention that, as someone in my group just added this to our itinerary. Looks like we'll definitely be going there.

Re: What to do in Montreal?

I have no idea if this is still true, but I believe that Montreal used to be generally regarded as about the best city in North America for strip clubs.
