Rear parking cameras are annoying.

I never had issues parking before. Then I get home with this Mini, and try to parallel park it. As soon as I start to reverse, this camera thing comes on, and lights start flashing accompanied by loud beeps. I ignore them. But they menacingly turn from green to yellow to red, and the loud beeps become one continuous loud beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeppp. I stop the car and get out to check. Huh... there's room for 2 Minis there and I'm not even close to hitting anything.

Backing up into the garage was even worse. It's a tight fit and I got the same red light + loud continuous beep treatment. It's as if it was shouting: "STOP!!! YOU'RE ABOUT TO BACK UP OVER TWO CHILDREN!".

All this thing does is make you doubt yourself. It's like they are designed to make you forget how to park. Not unlike millenials relying so much on their GPS that they have no sense of direction.

I think I'm gonna turn the damn thing off.

Re: Rear parking cameras are annoying.

Maybe your sensors are off or can be set to be less sensitive?

I'm poor so I've never had a car with parking sensors, but I will swear by parking cameras.

The camera is a great asset. The beeps are annoying, turn the sensors off.

Re: Rear parking cameras are annoying.

I can't even reliably use mine, it's got these different colored lines that you have to align with...WTF?!?, then I still have to get out to see that I have WAY more room than the camera alludes to. I'm too used to backing up the old fashioned way. I suppose one of these days I'm going to have to try to get used to it...

Re: Rear parking cameras are annoying.

My camera works great - I'm a fine parker but it's great for parallel parking to see that you have a bit more room than you might think otherwise. And I like seeing if there is anything on the ground behind my car when backing up - not just what I can see in my mirrors.

Mine doesn't have the beeping sensors though - I'd turn those off it it did.

I love my Honda Civic backup camera. Doesn't make any noise. Though I'm still old school and put my right hand behind the passenger headrest, as if I'm actually turning my head, but I'm not (I'm looking at the camera instead).

I like the parking sensor in my car. It's great when backing up into a parking spot.

I don't have a parking camera tho

Re: Rear parking cameras are annoying.

For me the sensors get annoying in winter when there's ice on the car and it constantly beeps. Otherwise, my car doesn't make a sound unless I'm very close to hitting something.

Wait until your sensor are going off, beeping is going nuts AND the wife tells you to "BE CAREFUL!!"

I love mine and backup using just the camera

Maybe try changing the settings? Or just turn it off.

I'm pretty sure you can turn off the beeping... but I leave it on.
And yeah... back up cameras are great.

Re: Rear parking cameras are annoying.

I watched a few YouTube videos yesterday and then went out and actually tried to use the camera. Once I understood what all the lines are for, I can see how it could be useful. The first time I backed up in the garage, I just ignored it. Now I noticed that the rear bumper is divided in sections and the left corner glows red (which makes the beeping worse). There's more room on that side but there's also a motorcycle there with bits sticking out (turn signal light, crash bar,...). I'm guessing that's what it sees the car potentially hitting.

Anyway, this is a loaner and I'm getting my car (stuck at the port/customs) next Tuesday. I'll ask them if the sound/beep has volume adjustment or can be turned off.

FYI, this is supposed to be the same system as the BMW idrive.

I believe my camera has already saved the lives of several children and disabled people in wheelchairs.

Re: Rear parking cameras are annoying.

Yeah, if you're regularly parking in a tight space (like your garage) just turn the sensors off.

Something you'd never hear during a GTA 5 multiplayer game.

I'm never buying another vehicle without a backup camera and navigation. Period.

If you have a phone, what do you need navigation for?

Now if you mean not having carplay or some way to integrate with your phone, sure. But I've never seen a car manufacturer build nav that's better than what you'd get using your phone, and doesn't cost hundreds of dollars just to update maps.

All new vehicles must have backup camera now. That's the law assuming you are in the USA.

I don't care about navigation but I won't buy a new car without Apple carplay and Android auto.

Re: Rear parking cameras are annoying.

I still like my GPS better than my phone. Phone uses data. GPS has memorized locations and folders to store them. I have hundreds of locations stored in mine.

I love the back-up camera. I had an aftermarket one installed in my car when I bought it. When I get in my wife's car it seems weird to have to back up the old fashioned way. Actually look.
