New England Tourist Question

Looking for tourist advice. My wife and I will be travelling to the massive antique show in Brimfield, MA next month. Staying in Springfield, MA. Looking for a day trip on one of the days we're in the area. We've already done Boston and New Haven on previous trips.

Would you rather spend a day in Providence or Cape Cod?

Re: New England Tourist Question

Serious question? Providence is a shit hole (no offense to any RI members!) Would you rather be in a run down, old industrial city or beach side towns?

A better comparison would be Cape Code to Newport, RI.

Re: New England Tourist Question

I live in MA and would recommend Portsmouth NH, great little walking town close to several beaches north or south of there with a good brewery (Portsmouth Brewery) and a great music store Bull Moose music, CDs LPs and DVDs etc.

haven't been to Providence in a long time but its not the nicest town. Saw a bunch of shows at Lupos hertbreak hotel ages ago but never seem to go there anymore.

The only good thing about Providence is the food.

Is someone disparaging my home state? I'll have you know that The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations (the smallest state in the Union but with the longest name) has the second largest unsupported marble dome in the world. The world!

Seriously, though, Providence isn't the shithole it used to be. There's been a rennaisance over the last 10 years. Still, if I had only one day to sight-see in RI I'd pick Newport. There's also the Mystic Seaport in Mystic, CT (about and hour or so South of Brimsfield MA).

Re: New England Tourist Question

Also to note; not sure if you've been to Brimfield before but that show can easily take up 2 full days of exploring. I've been out there a good few times and we're never able to see everything in one day.

But if you're going to explore; anywhere on the Cape, the casinos (if that's your thing) are close, Newport RI is very nice to walk around and has the tennis hall of fame if you're a fan. Only go to Providence if there's a specific reason. It's not a tourist city to just walk around.

Re: New England Tourist Question

I echo TGM's suggestion. Spend the day in Mystic, CT instead, and if it's your thing, take the short drive and check out Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun.

Re: New England Tourist Question

Thanks for the input all...

We've been to Brimfield a couple of times before, so we know what we're getting into there. We've got two full days set aside for that and one day to do a "day trip". One year we spent a day on the Connecticut coast around New Haven and last time we spent a day in Boston.

I've kind of figured Providence isn't really a "place to visit", so I guess I kind of meant "the Providence area"/Newport.

We're not really casino people. I'll check out Portsmouth and Mystic as options.

Re: New England Tourist Question

That being the case, I would suggest Newport. Ocean side, plenty of shops/places to eat, the mansions, tennis hall of fame...etc.

I agree. The cliff walk and mansions are beautiful. If you have time to tour only one mansion, I'd suggest Marble House (just because it's my personal favorite).

You haven't seen shithole until you've seen Springfield.
How about Manhattan? It's 2 1/2, maybe 3 hours from Springfield.
As for casinos, there's the MGM in downtown Springfield, but don't expect much, it's very small and the food is overpriced. If you like pizza, Red Rose, located right next to the MGM is the place to go in the area.

Re: New England Tourist Question

Newport over Providence 1000 times out of 1000. Mystic is nice too.

I'd also a throw in a recommendation for the Berkshires or Northampton for something a little closer to Springfield. The Berkshires had lots of great arts/culture as well as outdoor activities, although unfortunately you'll be a little early for the Tanglewood summer season. Northampton is an easily walkable quirky little college type town with lots of fun shops and restaurants.

Oh and I don't know if you're into baseball, or if the Yard Goats will be in town, but Dunkin Donuts Park in Hartford is a really great minor league stadium.
